What velocity does the 7.62x39 shoot a 180 grain nosler partition at again?

Since short barrels are all the rage :

The 180 NP is wasted in the Shorty 308, not enough speed. A cold beer says a Prvi 7.62x39 softpoint puts a deer on the ground faster than a Federal Premium 308 180 Nosler Partition in the shorty 308 does.

2450 fps MV 180gr NP puts them down quick

I don't know about .308's with 200 grain pills as I have never tried it, but I do know that I get 2400 fps with 200's out of a 16.5" barreled .358 Win... and regardless of the stats, one way or the other, it kicks ass on game... and the pills are the lowly Hornady 200 SP/RP #3510... I wonder what the 7.62X39 would put those out at from a 16.5" barrel (in .308 of course)?

I have a .358 Frontier as well, my load is the 250 Hornady SP on top of IMR 4198 ,I don’t know the speed but it is a hammer on game., My 22” .358 Hawkeye loves the 200 SP and shoots like a target rifle with the 180 Speer.

well i can tell you a low speed (just.1 grain above the max of varget) 30-06 with 200 grain partition is working well but you have to shoot like my wife between the ribs to avoid bone damages lol ...

Found on the net: "there are potential untapped strengths of the 7.62×39. First, because of the relatively small powder volume versus bore size, relatively little performance is lost as barrel length is reduced. This makes the 7.62×39 a perfect candidate for very short carbines. For example, a load that replicates M43 using Accurate #1680 powder will lose only about 70 fps when barrel length is reduced from 16 inches to 14 inches. Going down to a 12-inch barrel only loses another 83 fps, while a 10.5 inch barrel will still fire the 123-grain bullet at just over 2100 fps. The 7.62×39 is an ideal cartridge for a short-barreled rifle, provided a bullet that produces good terminal ballistics is used."

For a handy, lightweight deer rifle, with a very short barrel, this cartridge shines. It doesn't replace my 308, but it has its place for sure. I have to say, my CZ527 Carbine is an absolute joy to carry and shoot, and the Prvi soft points work very well.

It would be interesting to see two identical rifles with 14 inch barrels (or better yet, 12 inch barrels), one chambered in 7.62x39 and the other in 308, firing quality commercial ammo with similar BC (e.g. .300-.350), and measured on a chrony. My bet is that velocity would be very close. Yes, 150 vs 124 grains--so not really apples to apples, but close enough. MiG25 is not wrong.

Most of the intermediate cartridges like x39, 300 BLK, 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel and 5.56 are fairly forgiving of short barrels. It seems that around 8” of barrel will produce similar velocity between 123gr x39 and 150gr 308.

I want to know where all the SBR 7.62x39 hunters are in Canada? Should be a number of them, if it's so effective . Maybe they will chime in Laugh2

I've owned a 300 Blackout 16.5". Between that, and Quickload, I have a good idea how useless the x39 is

Use what you want, don't let me stop you and Mig from enjoying success in the field with your short barreled x39 rifles

I don't really care what people hunt with

48 grains of reloader 17 with 200gr pills out of a 22inch barrel will get you 2550 fps.

Us Donaldson Wasp fans aren't real hunters. God knows my CZ527 x39 Carbine sits idle in my locker as it has been so utterly useless. Thanks for the reminder tod.

I had a Ruger #1 in 22-250. My Son, then in the B.C. central interior, wanted it badly and I believe primarily for 'yotes'. An old custom Winchester High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp wearing a 10X J.UNERTL scope is what I replaced it with. It's a KEEPER and loves handloads using a Hornady 50gr V-MAX and top end charges of IMR 4064:d. Again,;) a keeper.

Nice deflection, not once have I mentioned a short 7.62x39, it's you and GH that fantasize about 8 and 10" barrels. The Overrated Shorty 308 is pretty much the same as an SKS.

Still waiting on the field photo of the Muley with the Shorty 308.
