Hi, I've been thinking about downsizing and trying to find one gun to do everything. I'll be hunting everything from Black bear to moose, the choices I've got it down to are 30'06, 338 Federal or 350 remington mag.Any thoughts on this idea?

One benefit I would suggest is a single trigger.

Jumping from gun to gun to gun...., the trigger differences I have noticed in my pursuit of handload accuracy lately has raised an eyebrow. I will be doing something about it - what I am unsure.

Here's my thought... DOWNSIZING!!! Have your head examined!

Quick question, what are your experiences with the 338 Federal? I haven't tried it yet but thought it was an interesting concept.

in the situation you describe i would go 308 or 30-06 due to ammo price and availability. unless you reload. then i would go 9.3x62 just to be different.

my picks for myself, 22 k-hornet for gophers, skunks, coyotes, etc, 8x57 for everything else.

I don't have any experience with this cartridge but when I read about it I was intriuged, it sounds like a good do everything round for me as I don't hunt varmits. The beauty of the 308/30'06 is I can get ammo anywhere, and cheap. I have some reloading gear but have not tried it out yet.

That was my first though, too... :D

Of your choices I opt for the .30-06 Springfield.......:)

But then again, why not go .300 Win Mag and give yourself a little more reach... ;)

Downsize = **SHOCK**

In fact.... more pondering... if I was to "downsize" [heaven forbid! ].... it would maybe be to 2 rifles.... a .30-06 and a .300 Win Mag. ;)

Naw, scrap that idea.... just couldn't do it..... :p

Okay I get it, you are looking to purchase an "all-purpose" rifle. I would agree with NAA... the 30-06 or 300 win mag would make excellent choices as would a 7mm Rem Mag. There are several others but these would be my top three choices for these animals if (heaven forbid) I was limited to one rifle. I think you will really enjoy reloading for any of these chamberings. There are a lot of fine bullets and powders available. It is a great distraction over the winter. Cheers!

Really, there's nothing more to say. In this day and age, with reloading and the availability of all manner of specialty factory loads, there's nothing these guns can't do. If griz or buffalo is on your list, I'd tend towards the 300 or 7, but those three guns will do anything you want them to with the right load. I'd be spending more time worrying about the gun and the scope you were going to choose.

I've always thought of the 30'06 as an old man gun, but I think it would be the most practical choice for me, now which gun to buy? 2 that have caught my eye are the ruger #1 stainless, but I also like the look of the Savage Euro classic.

North Americian hunting only? Then the 30.06 or 300 mag will do for one gun. However if you are going elsewhere then the 375 H&H is the world standard!!

hard to go wrong with a 308 on up, depending on how much reach you need

something between 308 & 45/70 should do the trick

IIif you had to choose 2, you woudl pick a 30-06 and a 300WM?

I think about doing this quite regularly, each time i go to my garage, stand in front of my loading bench and repeatedly bang my head on it until the feelin goes away.

But if circumstances dictated one gun and one gun only, I would carry a 300 Win mag, probably a Sako.

first thing you need to do is give yourself a good slap in the head for even thinking such nonsense.downgrade on guns.you should have at least all the above.you never know when backup is needed

I'm starting to think the one gun thing was a bad idea, my wife was complaining last night about my gun obsession, maybe I should just be more secretive and not tell her anything, but I think a new gun would make me feel better.

Gatehouse's got a point there, you're picking two cartridges that are awefully close performance wise from a hunting perspective.

Unfortunately your quest is in vain. It takes a bare minimum of 4(four) guns to hunt NA game and I would feel more comfortable with 6(six).

I know I know the "3006 will do everthing" crowd will tell you different but they're the same dudes who have a tool box that only contains some duct tape and a pair of vice-grips.
