One gun hunter?

I could do it all with 4 centerfire rifles.

Here is what I would end up with:

223 for yotes

7RM and 300WSM for general hunting. (Why 2 of such similar capabilities? Well if one breaks, gets stolen, get's dropped off a cliff etc the other is the spare)

375 H&H

Witht todays bullets, this combo is good for the whole world, IMHO.

Yep I'm down to only 2 Main Hunting rifles......
223 for Yotes and such
260 for everything else:cool:

If I ever go to Africa the Big Bore Rifle will be the cheap part;)

I would never do it. Ever.

For the sake of argument, I'd have to go with something like a 375, one of the 9.3's, or maybe a 9mm mauser. My idea of 'all round' includes some big stuff, starting elk/moose size on up. No piddling little deer for me, thanks

This whole thing is weeing in the wind IMO.
Save us from such suggestions, please!
I'm having enough trouble assembling the armoury WITHOUT this sort of stuff.
My wife has fixed ideas about how many guns you can shoot at once as it is.:(
One sniff of something like this and back to square one.
But, since this seems like a popular topic to hypothesise, lets have at it.
If we're picky we have to stick to a single cal.
Ok, power enough to stop a moose, wide range of projectiles, flexible performance.
Here I'm going to presume that if you're stupid enough to sell the rest that you will spend decent amounts of money on your single cal rifle and reload.
Otherwise you may as well give it up.
Well, you'd be hard put to go past the 6.5x55, 7x57 or, much as I find it boring, the 308 Win.
You may want to have QR mounts for different scopes though.
Your super light varmint loads are going to be far different from the low velocity heavy bullet brush loads.
If, on the other hand, you are willing to go the switch barrel route a TC Contender single shot, Swiss Arms, Blaser or Mauser 66 are all excellent choices.
You could even buy a Kreighoff drilling in 7x65R/12g/12g with insert barrels in 5.6x52R and 9.3x74R for different game.

9mm Mauser??
Is that 9x57 or do you mean 8mm Mauser?

One gun?
Old badger has a very cool 308 / 12 gauge Brno that is very accurate with both barels, and the 12 gauge shoots foster slugs into the same POI as the 308 at about 80 yards.
HOWEVER, I ain't planin' on going that route, EVER!!
Too much fun having all the others to play with......:D

I'm starting to think the one gun thing was a bad idea, my wife was complaining last night about my gun obsession, maybe I should just be more secretive and not tell her anything, but I think a new gun would make me feel better.
How long have you had your wife (ER, I mean been married) :D
I have only one gun as well for hunting ( although i've changed many times ) and it's a lowly 270, but i've been told many times by people on CGN that it works for everything from 'Yotes to moose'---so that's good enough for me, but yes, you can choose always something bigger if you so desire, and why not ( not you TED )
On the other hand, i own 2 12g O/U, 3 20g O/U and 3 .22 rifles
And yet i only really NEED 1 gun for hunting !!!!!!!!
Good luck, next year let us all know how many guns you own (that your wife doesn't know about of course)

I was just in another forum talking about my great Ruger M77 Mk2, with the synthetic Stalk in 30-06. Someone had described the Ruger Stalk as a "canoe-paddle stalk"...never herd that one before...HAHA. But like FOXER said above, in this day and age of reloading...theirs nuthing ya can't do. I liked Winchester's 180 gr Fail Safe for hunting...big $$$ to buy factory. They worked quite well.

308 or 3--06 are very simlar in terms of hunting ballistics. I have a 30-06 for hunting, but I will be soon buying a 308 for target just because of the smaller recoil. Get nothing bigger as ammo is WAY more expensive, and the benefit vs. pain in the ass factor is bigger loads like 300 Win Mag and up make them all a waste of time and money. In terms of universal hunter either .308 or 30-06 will do nicely. More important to practice more often and get better placement (Head/Heart Lung) shots. With a head or heart/lung shot, it won't matter if it was a .308, 338 or a .375 H&H. The only difference will be the money in your pocket. Contrary to all lot of bullsh*t talk here, NO-ONE seriously hunts out past 400-500yrds even in the prairie.

I think that the one rifle concept is a sick, perverse and disgusting concept, especially in a forum of Gunnutz :D

If for some reason I had to keep just one rifle to do it all it would be this one.

BRNO 602 .375 H&H, CRF, 5 to 6 shot magazine, factory express sights with the barrel shortened to 20".

I'd mount a Leupold 1.5x5 VXIII in Warne or Talley QD rings.

Do anything, anywhere.

I believe this is where I step back and let the mob with flaming torches and pitch forks get on with the job...... :D
drvrage, I actually think that it does make a difference.
I don't know if you've ever looked at the Taylor Knockdown Scale.
It adds bullet diameter to the normal mass and velocity calculations and I think Taylor was onto something, at least for big game.
The 400-500yd range, well, some people like to shoot that far.
If I had to pick 308 as my only cal I'd be picking up a BLR or better still, a M1a to enable faster follow ups.
If you can't be sure your first shot will be fatal, and less powerful cartridges on really big game like moose can suffer that, then you want to be able to hit again fast and accurately.
I know it goes against all we aim to achieve as hunters (i.e.a one shot kill) but if you only have one gun and aim to hunt everything with it then there are going to have be allowances.
Actually, talking of BLRs, perhaps 358 Win is a possible.
I know of guys who load it with .357 cal pistol bullets for plinking and small game loads.
The 250 grainers are up to the task for really big game.

There are many out there, not nearly as many as short range hunters for sure, but there are a lot more dedicated to long range hunting , and doing it in an ethical, clean-kill manner than you would expect!:)
