One gun hunter?

IIif you had to choose 2, you woudl pick a 30-06 and a 300WM?

Gatehouse's got a point there, you're picking two cartridges that are awefully close performance wise from a hunting perspective.

In addition I also said "Naw, scrap that idea.... just couldn't do it"... ;) :p

I'd go with a Federation issued Phaser; just make sure you don't set it to "vaporize" when you're hunting.

Seriously now, If I could only have one rifle, it would be a 30.06. Reasons?

-availability of ammo anywhere you go
-variabitly of loads
-long range and flat trajectory

I know I know the "3006 will do everthing" crowd will tell you different but they're the same dudes who have a tool box that only contains some duct tape and a pair of vice-grips.

Actually - we just know how to shoot :)

Go for the # 1 if you are determined. You will love it so much that they will have to saw off your fingers to get it away from you when you leave this realm.

One gun to do it all... interesting concept... totally misguided, completely without merit, indicative of a serious brain malfunction, and likely to involve therapy later in your shooting career... but an interesting concept nonetheless.
If self medication or banging your head against the floor does not help then look at a .300WSM or 300WM in a good quality CRF bolt action like a Model 70, Sako or similar Mauser type action.

Most people that only have 1 rifle are longing for more;) however these people also should know this rifle up, down and inside out, and are able to hit anything with it at any distance

If I had to have one gun? Factory ammo only it would be a .30-06.

handloading? .338-06 or .35 Whelen.

Not the people I know that own one gun, they are the guys that shoot 1/2 box of shells every fall, as soon as one shot hits the paper, they consider that sighted in.

Yeah, exactly. And when the "one gun man" shoots "too much gun" he's too scared to shoot more than half a box anyway.

I like the idea of having one "go to" gun. For me that's a 300WM but I gotta experiment with other rifles or I'd get bored...fast.

I couldn't do the one gun thing for a few reasons.
First, I have a whole bunch of them and enjoy shooting them all.
Second, of the rifles I have , many are completly different critters from each other, from .22LR to .577 Snider.
Third, I guess could pare it down to a small game rifle, a big game rifle , and a shotgun, but that would mean selling my target rifles, and the rest of my hunting rifles and shotguns, which would be foolish, and no fun at all!

I went through the one gun phase.... way back when I was new. Seemed logical at the time, I even remember thinking a combination gun would be real handy at one point.
I suppose it has a lot to do with the priorities and economic reality of many young hunters with young families and other responsibilities.:(

I really don't think you have a brain malfunction..... well maybe...:p

If i was to go "on gun" it would be 7mm RM. However, have you considered 3? I would go with a .22 of some sort for fun/plinking/gophers, a 30 cal of some sort (.308, 30-06) for big game and of course a 12 guage. Then you have all your bases covered for most hunting situations in Canada with only 3 guns. You could do this relatively inexpensively as well. Seems simple doesn't it?   I wish it were!

Good luck with this.

I'm afraid Blargon is starting to exhibit traits specific to a man with an Ibogain addiction.

while i've never shot a 300 mag, i have done the 338 and i can tell you from an economic point of view that the 308/3006 is a better choice- you get 1 more round as well as more shots per pound of powder- also you pay for that word magnum in a number of ways - in ammo, the gun is typically heavier, and it generates about a third more recoil- for strict hunting- 308- 30-06
if you want to devestate vast stretches of forest, 338 win mag

I'll be hunting everything from Black bear to moose

If I were mostly hunting black bear and moose, I would keep my Whelen.

A 35Whelen will give you one more in the magazine than a 350RemMag and factory ammo is more readily available.

200gr for deer and 250s for bigger stuff.

Tolerable recoil.

Easy to reload for. Brass is easy to resize from 30/06.

Hi, I've been thinking about downsizing and trying to find one gun to do everything. I'll be hunting everything from Black bear to moose, the choices I've got it down to are 30'06, 338 Federal or 350 remington mag.Any thoughts on this idea?

I have a 30-06 & a 7MM Mag, both are great for any game in Canada

I've decided to be a 3 gun hunter, just bought a Tikka 6.5x55 from the forums, I'm going to buy a 12 gauge next week and by spring I'll have a Ruger No.1 in 45/70 or 375 H&H, hopefully that will cover everything I want to hunt.

I just went through the one gun phase myself...Little different way though.

Since I am not a very experienced shooter, always found the shooting different guns was challenging due to the difference in trigger, balance, weight & etc…

Then, I found Blaser R93!!
I was very intrigued by their diversity and design (straight-pull bolt action, easy take down & etc...) I started out with one gun + two barrels 243 & 30-06 (can’t wait to get 270 to fill the gap!!). This is still ONE gun...right?..^^

I never thought that I was able to shoot sub MOA beyond 100 yds, especially with out of box factory gun. But with Blaser, I am in a whole new world of shooting!! Amen!!!

Hello BIGREDD, I was hoping to do the same with shotgun. I am looking at SBE II. 26" turkey gun (for turkeys, upland, small game & etc…) + 24" rifle slug barrel (for deer) How easy is it to change one barrel to another? Does the forearm need to be changed with barrels?
