Only One Handgun

I would be one of my 40S&W ... either 226, M&P or Taurus 24/7.

Why 40? 45 is too bulky or mag is limited. 9mm is not a bad option, but 40 has more punch. Given the mag limit of 10, I would prefer 10 rounds of 40s&w vs 10 rounds of 9mm. Also, with 40S&W you have an option to get 357sig barrel and have fun with that caliber. too.

If you are not sure what you'll have to deal with, there is always the Contender...

I think a Beretta 92FS for me. I like a lot of plastic and steel pistols and revolvers, but the 92FS is just gorgeous, fits great in my hand, 9mm is cheap and fun to shoot, there's a good selection of accessories and parts, good heft/stability, it's a winner for me. Shows those paper targets and steel plates who's boss!

A REAL all arounder covering everything from a serious open carry gun, to CCW, to hunting big game pistol? Well, off the top of my head there isn't that many guns that are that versatile. But I'll give it a shot. Tough question. It would either be an old Rossi 5 shot DA .44 Special. I forget the model; but stainless with unfluted cylinder with a 3" barrel, if we're playing anything goes... or the Ruger GP 100 with 3" barrel. More likely the Ruger, OR a NICE 1911 full size in 10 mm. Probably a Kimber or similar. That would probably be my top pick. And perhaps I'd get the same with a Commander size grip.

This was tougher than I thought.
I guess I'd go with my M&P 40. It's not even close to being my favourite.
I love my GP100 and my S&W 29, and I like my 645 even more.

But if I've only got one, it's going to have to be the M&P (even though I'm cheating and also have a 9mm barrel for it).

*I stayed away from 'Dream' guns and focused on what I'm already familiar with.

I've essentially played this game for real. Bought and sold probably 30 - 40 handguns over the years. I've decided to stick with the CZ-75. I prefer the combat model to the SP01 (full length dust cover) style. But that is just my preference. I was lucky enough to get a Shadowline in the combat style recently, I will be keeping this pistol as my one. All others are gone... well other than my Bersa 380 in case SHTF for CCW.

Probably my HK45. Great ergonomics, durability, and reliability; 10rd mags; can shoot everything from moderately light loads for practice, to full-power loads effective against medium-sized predators, to hot .45Super if I need to shoot something big and hungry.

Second choice would probably be my Glock 20.

If you could only have one handgun for everything that you use a handgun for, which one would it be? (No sci-fi stuff lol)

Well, that is a lot to unload. As it stands there are several factors you have to think about.

SIZE:
You have to consider that, as you're looking for a good general purpose handgun, you're going to have to look at size and concealability (for IDPA, 3-gun and the like) as well as not being so small that it'll be a problem for you to handle.

MASS:
Light guns have more recoil and are typically less fun for normal people to shoot for any great duration. On the other hand, you still want to be able to hold it up for said extended duration range visits.

CALIBRE:
This is currently a double edged sword, as there isn't a whole lot of the "common" calibres available. But I'd still recommend looking to get a handgun chambered in a locally common calibre, such as 9 x 19 NATO or .40 S&W as per some police agencies.

UBIQUITY:
How common is the handgun? How available are spare parts for it? What about accessories?

So based on this set of criteria, where I'm located, I'd recommend looking at Glock 19, Glock 48, Glock 17, Glock 23 and Glock 22 in order of preference.

NOTE:
I'm not a Glock guy. I'm a "what's the criteria to meet" guy. If SIG's 320/365 series had better saturation in the Canadian market, I'd steer you to consider them as well.

Hope this helps.

-S.
