Ontario Fall Black Bear Hunting

My B&C bear has Arrived. A full 30 minutes after I dropped off the latest goodies which included the used deep fryer oil....that was all it took.

Good luck with your hunt. I was thinking on trying this year but I have nobody to hunt with. I am not to far from Timmins "was actually there today lol" I am near Kirkland Lake. Wished I had someone to hunt bear with :(

That brings up my first bear. Was just before last light on a tiny grown in logging trail from many years before. I had a honey burn I believe it was going and heard something coming down the hill in front of me. At about 15 yards this little bear head popped out from behind some brush as it stood up to see. BOOM, 170gr silver point 30-30 droped him where he stood. I moved to the left so I could see him, he was down, not moving, I kept an eye on him for maybe 15-20min before getting the nerve to walk closer, at about 5-7yards I said #### it and put another shot in his head to be sure!

Even with 2 shots in the head, and after I had cut it from ass to head open it still was weird to look down and see this wild animal with big teeth and claws inchs away. Wasn't only my first bear, but it was my first game animal. I've dropped a few animals since, never got the same feeling afterwards. Often I keep the 2nd shot out of the story, truth be told :redface:
 
It would seem as though my Junior Bear has been offically bounced from my Bait this week, in his place I have a large Sow and two cubs who have taken over. How do the veterans handle this ? I cant even find anything in the regs on the mnr website outlining the rules on Sows and cubs, my guess is that its a no-no. My gut feeling tells me to let her walk, not sure the cubs would make it on their own.

I ran into two guys baiting another stand one mile away from mine, I just hope she moves her crew into their bait.
 
I would never take a sow with cubs. Sows ensure new generations of bears for future hunting. Hunting over bait gives hunters the chance to observe their bear & decide if they want to take the shot. I have never seen a sow with cubs come in alone. The cubs usually come in first. If you are NOT looking for a trophy, harvest one of the cubs. It will be great eating. I always have sow/cubs coming to my baits. Also other bears. I don't know of a way to stop sows from visiting your baits. Maybe another member will share if there is a way.

Take advantage of bears coming in to study shot placement, anatomy , angle, etc, will better prepare you , and give you the mindset to make a clean ethical kill shot.

How long have you had the bait out? I bet lots more bears will be hitting it shortly. Hope fully your neighbour doesnt bait more then you and more often. They may take yours as a second choice :( little ones take the worst

Im not suicidal and I cant take two of them in the same sitting :).

Starting this week I will be baiting twice a week, Ill just go on the assumption that other bears will show up.

I dropped off some meat and gravy on sunday night and they are probably running on empty right now. That should give her a chance to hit the other bait and leave mine alone.

I haven't read the regs relating to bear hunting in a couple years but the last I remember is that it said that it was illegal to kill a cub born in the year of the hunt or a sow accompanying such cubs.
