Splinter? Intrigued, but I don't think I have enough girth on the forend.

Getting Ruger style side panels...

I have been watching this project and really like where you are going with this rifle.

I think I would get another opinion before removing some of those side panels as the extra wood there now may add needed extra strength to the area whereas removing them might weaken the spot and induce cracking at the tang. IIRC, that is why the early German stalking rifles had those large flat panels on the sides through the action area for extra strength.

Am I missing something here....days of work a month ago to bring the beauty of that wood out for us to admire (nice job by the way) and now remove all that goodness to do the woodwork changes....Kinda reminds me of my wife, takes two hours to get presentable to go downtown and then drives to the salon....LOL

I know, I am never satisfied. LoL
Though it's relatively easy to oil finish a stock. I am just happy the wood is decent and has potential. It'll be back to its Schaftol finish.

Chris decided to take less off the panels as a precaution. I didn't even need to remind him. It's coming along...

Well the forestock is getting shortened by about an inch and is getting an African black wood tip with a subtle Schnabel and a widow's peak to match the buttplate. 24 lpi wrap around checkering. My budget has been enlarged, but what the hell. This will be a lifetime gun.

I think you got this rifle from Italian Sporting Goods last year? I was hemming and hawing about buying it together with another Brno rifle they were advertising, but ended up passing on this one. Kinda regretted it; regretted it more when I read how much you were liking it. Now that you've dressed it up so tastefully, I really regret it.

Nice work, nice rifle.

Yes, I did--December of last year from Italian Sporting Goods. It shoots and handles well. Built like a tank, 5.95lbs (probably lighter once stock work is complete), and the metal workmanship is excellent. Not too many polished, deeply blued finishes coming from the factory these days! Stock is almost done. The buttplate and grip cap still need to be blued and it's currently awaiting checkering.
