Opinions on Norinco M14

Hi guys,


I'd like to here from the M14 crowd , type of info like first time you came across one. Did you get the "oh ..another huge battle rifle ..where are the 5.56?"
or was it more like "Oooh I gotta try/have this!!!"

How many people here have a Norinco m14 but were able to compare (or also own) with a Winchester, Remington, and Springfield Armory M14?

Is the Norc M14 a good enough base gun to start with or should I just save my moola till I find a proper M14

What's better a Norinco M14 or a Poly ?
Curious also on the range of a Norinco/Poly to the real thing ... I'm sure there's a big dif in range.

And for the real thing , which is better Win, Rem or Springfield?
What's the dif between the M305 and the new m305s?

And if I get (or someone else here gets one) is there something I should know like picking a good mount, scope , carry rig ect... (and not have to waste time with trial and error)

The Springfield M1A I have played with was nicer in finish in comparison to the Norc, but the Norc has done well, functioning very well both on the range and in the bush.

The Norc or Poly is a good gun as is, but you can spend a little or a lot depending on what you intend to do with the gun. Basic mods will go a long way in improving accuracy: op rod spring guide, spring, sights, etc. and those don't require extravagant amounts of cash to purchase. You can customize your rifle to take on a different configuration, such as a bush rifle or "Socom"-type. There are lots of stocks you can dress your rifle up in. It goes on and on. :cool:

If I wanted to drop a lot of coin on a semi .308, I would personally go the AR10 route, and I intend to do that some day. As it is, I'm a poor bloke and my Norc makes me happy.
 
unless you are legally grandfathered, forget owning a real M14 - and even if you did, you are not allowed to shoot them - they're prohibited.

Your choices are:

- Chinese
- SAI M1A
- Import something like an LRB receiver from the US and build a gun = ridiculously expensive, think $3K+
 
Having a Valmet M 78, a FN L1A1, a real (neutered) M14, and a Garand I bought three Norinco M14s's.

If you want to shoot, they are fine.
If you want to build up a 21 pound rifle with all options including clock radio, lots of guys have done that as well using a Norc receiver.

Get at least two.
 
ok, a couple of things- the REAL m14s are prohibited, as already mentioned- so that's a pipe dream- the CLOSEST you're going to is a poly, norc, or an m1a springfield, or one of the italianclones that marstar are supposed to be bringing in- as far as the real m14s are concered, there are ONLY 4 manufacturers- harrington -richardson( h&r)winchester, springfield.(the government armorry, not the PRIVATE CONCERN) AND TRW- THE TRW is kind of the holy grail of m14s- tolernces are tighter,one piece op rods and a bunch of other things - there is NO REMINGTON m14- - ok now FORGET about those
the ones that are available- the poly , norc, and the m1a- the m1a is roughly about 4x the price of the norc, but the norc probably needs a new tail sight and stock, and a few tweeks as provided by one of hungry's clinics- so maybe you need another 500 bucks worth of work- so you get a rifle as good as the m1a or maybe better for 1k instead of 2.5 or better- the italians are still an unknown quantity- a lot of us are taking it on faith b/c of the way they made the garands that they will be of consistantly better quality than the chinese

And Ipscgraz , you have a real (neutered) M14 (that doesn't mean deactivated) and you still can shoot it or not?

First time I picked up a Chinese copy of the m14 , I thought cool , till I rattled it and kind of passed on it. Now that I'm more into battle rifles ( I lie , I'm into anything that turns my crank ) I dunno about you guys now but a few years ago I would run with a larger crowd of people and we'd go to the range and it wasn't unusual to see stuff from FN,AR,AK,HK,UZI ...well everything that we look now and go " aww man I should of gotten one " bcz now they're gone or just really hard to find .

So now I'm here going Mmmh a M14 , I'd like to shoot one of those and most people I know now have a .12 nova and a 7mm Remington with maybe a .22 pistol and they're the bomb . I haven't shown my collection to anyone except for my brother in like 15 years or so . I pick up a piece here and there whenever the opportunity arises. But now with a little more cash my way . I'm looking to enjoy some of the finer things in life that the government will allow .

Ok , so send me the therapy bill and let's keep this show on the road.

I liked what you guys said . If I'm gonna jump in the consensus is 2 rifles is better than one. Change you rear sights and get a better stock (not one of the metal ones like at Marstar?)

Any M305 would do, Poly or Norc... Get a SEI scope mount and a good scope that will resist the recoil ( I chose a 4x)
Everything else is extra, from good guide rods to NM sights.
Get ammo. Lots...
 
there was a rather NASTY LETTER THAT CAME OUT JANUARY 2/2005 that said " there was a MISINTERPETATION of the law re 12(###) PROHIBITED FIREARMS and there will be no issuances of special authorizations to transport for target shooting" that meant no att's for those weapons and they were confined to the safe unless you wanted to show or repair- it ticks me off to no end to have that uzi and m14 sitting in the safe simply b/c the government "misinterpeted " the law- and i'm still looking for a WINCHESTER to complete the set- one from EACH manufacturer
and they're SUPPOSED TO RATTLE- what you're hearing is the GAS PISTON sliding in the GAS CYLINDER- that's how you check to see if the piston and op rod are lined up and ENGAGED properly- there IS a way to assemble the piston inside the cylinder so that the extension doesn't line up with the hole and still put on and tighten the nut- but the rifle won't work- the "extension" has to be showing out of the end of the gas cylinder and resting against the op rod- if it doesn't rattle when yoiu dip the muzzel down and back up, there's something WRONG with your assembly- PULL IT APART AND DO IT AGAIN- this is with the action locked open, of course- it may work with the action closed, i just never tried it
 
For about $500 they are just WAAY too much fun, and they shoot and shoot and shoot. And they're like Rem 700's and 870's, you can leave them stock or add the kitchen sink with integral ipod dock (my stock cost twice as much as the rifle). I will admit, my m305 is just a plinker, and now that i finished my AR10, it is second banana. But you can buy a norc and put a Krieger barrel on it for less than a new springfield and it would probably be more accurate.

Nope...it hasn't had a warm barrel for about 8 years or some dammed thing.:mad::mad:

1ronM@n:, There are quite a number of members on this board who either own or used to own real USGI M14's, Hungry, Lazarus2000, Skullboy to name a few.
I believe they have all pronounced the newer Chinese guns the approximate equivalent of a rack-grade M14.
That is not the general opinion of M1A

Not exactly. "As assembled" they are nowhere near a USGI gun. However, with a few basic inexpensive adjustments to the basic rifle, it can be very comparable. The single biggest thing is making sure the barrel is indexed.

After that, I would say getting USGI sights. At this point you are fairly close to USGI performance if your Chinese bolt is in tolerance.
 
pardon the noob question whats a "rack grade" and "USGI"?

I always wanted an M14 so I am trying to learn a bit off this site. Also why do you need two?
