I had forgotten we have a "shotgun" forum here and posted a request on the hunting and shooting arms forum, where I do tend to hang out. But the essence of my request was for info about the Norinco HP-9 shotguns. Basically, I have a buddy looking for an inexpensive shotgun FOR HUNTING. Not blasting a gazillion rounds of ammo at Figure 11 targets or whatever, but actually hunting. My normal advice to anybody looking for a value-priced shotgun is to go with the Remington 870 Express 12 ga, and here in Ontario to go for the combo that also gives you a slug barrel for deer.

Then I saw a local ad for a 12 ga Norinco HP-9 Combo in Camo Pattern with 2 barrels: one with rifle sights and one longer barrel with a vent rib and bead sight. Both barrels apparently accept choke tubes.

I know nothing about the Norinco's: I have never even seen one, let alone held one or examined one. I understand these are an 870 clone, ie another rip-off of American design by the PRC, who seem to have little regard for copyright and patent laws.... (editorial comment, guess who never owned a Norinco because of ideological reasons... )

Are they reliable HUNTING guns? And if so, what should my buddy pay for this combo? Any opinions are welcome. Thanks!

Doug

The Marstar guy told me that he had only two returns on 400 sales of the 870 copy so that is pretty decent. You can however pick up a maverick for cheaper from wholesale sports.

I have one in 14". One shot extension. Works fine. You would be better off getting the 18", more shots. Better groups.

The only norc shotgun really worth buying is the HP9-1 because of it's 14" barrel and compatibility with standard REM 870 parts/accessories. I believe the other models have different spec barrels and mag tubes, making them incompatible with factory rem barrels. Although, if you didn't care about that they are a bit cheaper, but not by much.

A little, but hte truth is I have used both the Express and the HP-9, and the HP-9 seems every boit as good. In fact, I liked the HP-9 a bit more, seemed to function a bit better.

But these were examples of one of each, hardly representative.

The finish on the HP9-1 is a lot better than the one on the Rem 870 Express.
The bead blasting is more fine and the parkerizing seems thicker and is a lot darker.
They are both equally as reliable, but I find the Norc a bit smoother. All dimensions on the HP9-1's receiver are the same as on the 870 (believe me, I know).
I got an HP9-1 for it's short barrel (great for bears protection/camping/defense) and the fact that all Remington 870 barrels fit right on.

thanks guys.

Clarke I apologize for thinking you were just stirring ####, looks like you actually were being serious!!!!!!

So what is the combo worth, $$$$ ????

A bit of pot stirring, maybe, as I htink they are both comparabel shotguns. The Express sure doesn't feel like an old slick Wingmaster..

Honestly between the 2, I'd buy the HP-9.

Check Marstars website for prices, I dont know, I bought mone a year or 2 ago...

And the wingmaster doesn't feel like an even slicker Mod. 31 Rem.

So you are commenting about which shotgun (or bike) is better without any real experience with either, so your comments are irrelevent.
Seems to me those were your words.

I got to shoot a 14''. It was nice but could of had some gizmos on it. I think the price alone is worth it for the 14'' barrel.

I was thinking about getting it, but I went with a 7shot 870 18''. Paid 437 tax in out the door at lebaron.
