Ottawa Norinco M14 clinic - any interest?

Just home from the clinic. There were 4 of us, including one walk-on who learned about the event through his club's announcements mailing list.

We found there were no two rifles alike. Each one had its own subtle variations - flash suppressor webs, front muzzle hole, spot welds or not, loose operating rod guides, barrel set screw or not, blued or parkerized finish, one or two scope base grooves on the receiver, solid or loose back sights, various op rod hump configurations, stocks, etc, etc.

Most of the rifles weren't bad for disassembly, but one needed some extra hands to undo a very tight gas plug and another refused to give up its spot welds. I watched two guys and a portable drill press eat through half-a-dozen drill bits and still not get through the welds. It needs a small end mill to bite into that hard welding.

All together a good exchange of ideas, including many things I'd never heard.

A big thank you to Maple-Leaf-Eh for organizing things and sharing his knowledge with all. A good time was had and it’s always great to meet fellow nutz! Hers just a taste of how things went.

Many KUDOS to Maple Leaf Eh on a very informative and at times entertaining day at the M14 clinic. They don't make drills like they used to.
We learned a great deal of helpful modifications and adjustments to the rifle that will no doubt make it a more accurate and better functioning firearm.

Flashider welds - there is real variation in these. Some are really strong penetrating hard welds. I think the easiest way to deal with these is to use an abrasive burr in a Dremel type tool. There were some we couldn't drill at the OSA clinic.
I would suggest: If the hider does NOT have to be removed, leave it alone. If it MUST come off, and the welds don't break easily or quickly, stop, and wait until you have a replacement on hand, because you are going to damage the hider during the removal.

Darn I am upset I could not make your clinic. I have alot of questions. Congrats on having a great clinic. I have not taken off my flash hinder yet but I can not see any welds. Are all the Norcs welded? or is it hit and miss?

Almost all have welds, particularly the ones without a bayonet lug. Look on the bottom of the rear collar, you may see two slightly discoloured spots in an area that has been dressed off. If you loosen the castlenut set screw, and back off the castlenut, and the hider does not move, its welded.
