PAL Wait Time

Mine was received March 3rd - nothing showing up online yet and no credit card charge. I’m holding out a shimmer of hope I’ll get it this spring, but who knows. I wish there was a bit more detail on what kind of delays they’re thinking - is it a few weeks or are we looking at 6 months+? Simple PAL, no checks, squeaky clean history.

Hey everyone, I can now help out a little here.

Miramichi received my application on December 9th 2019.
My card was charged late December/early January I believe but was for 60 dollars not the 80 for restricted.
I phoned to make sure everything was good information-wise and was told it seems good, and they just charged me another 20 dollars and changed the application to restricted.
In late January the status changed with the "you will be contacted" status because my picture was crap haha get a good passport photo if you can just in case. This was a big time waster.
I called about a week after the new photo was received, and was told it would be scanned soon.
About one week later it was back to the processing status and I was told the application was with the CFO.
I kept calling in about once every two or three weeks and was told that it was still just waiting.
Then yesterday, March 24th, I got a call from a very friendly firearms officer and had a quick 5 minute interview and within an hour the status was approved and issued. I called her back soon after to get the license number and expiry.

This was in Saskatchewan and I had a box checked for previous mental health issues that are all resolved so I'm very surprised at the timeline but it could be due to it being in Sask as well.

I know that at least one reference was also contacted but haven't talked to the other since. I was also told that they aren't printing and that the actual license would be a couple/few months so that's why I called for license number.

I'm not on here too often but I can answer some questions probably if anyone is interested.

That’s really the only part we needed.

Would have been great to ask if licenses are printed and shipped as processed. There are a few of us who saw our licenses as issued but have not received them.

With hundreds of applications in the same situation, I wouldn't. What could a supervisor do, anyway.

Has anyone ever had any luck calling the CFO and asking for a supervisor? I asked for the extension/contact info of the officer in charge of my file (as I was advised to do by other users) and was told they would not provide that info

I'm in Quebec, currently waiting. Obviously with patience as this current crisis unfolds. Hope you're all well.

RE: Quebec wait times...do they differ from other provinces in general?

Just saw on the RCMP firearms site that new licenses won’t be processed until this is over. So who knows if we’ll get them this year. Disappointing to say the least. I’m fortunate that my job is still going 100% working from home, so I’ll at least save up for when I eventually do get it. Take care all.

From the RCMP website:

"Due to measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Canadian Firearms Program is currently experiencing significant impacts to our services, like many other service providers in Canada.

Clients may experience longer than normal wait times when calling the contact centre
The processing of applications for a new firearm licence is on hold until further notice
The production of firearms licence cards is on hold until further notice
The delivery of Firearms Safety Course (s) may be postponed due to social distancing protocols"

Sigh

Thanks, understood. I'm speaking more about Quebec's processes in normal times, and whether it requires calling repeatedly, etc.

Thanks for your reply, no worries there.
More asking about dealing with Quebec in normal circumstances.

I took my non-restricted last June and my restricted in September, and just received my card in the mail on March 12th, for anybody out there hoping to get theirs by spring or whatever, sorry to be the bear of bad news but you’ll be waiting quite a lot longer than that, potentially the end of summer going into fall or even longer. If I waited from 6-7 months without the COVID crisis going on, you better be damn sure they’re gonna take even more time now. I just read they halted application processing and license printing. Bad time for some folks unfortunately.

Keep getting error 1 when trying to check status online, mailed in via Express post got there March 5 or 6th.

Any insight?

I think I'm in the same boat - and I worry it is sitting in a pile on a desk and won't be looked at for month. I would imagine we're the last group to not make it through.

Error 1: we do not have any information that matches this data. If the data is correct please check you application status again at a later date.

Is what I keep getting. Got there Feb 25.

They received mine on the 17th of Feb, but kept getting that msg youre getting until it changed to "Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued." on Mar 18th. Probably gonna take a while for it to get here due to the current situation though. I'll keep calling them to see if I can get my PAL #

This isn't a question related to the current health crisis.

Does Quebec normally take longer to approve PAL and RPAL applications, and what have people done in the past to try and encourage the Surete to process their application?

(I understand nothing's happening right now...asking about Quebec's process normally)

I'm also interested to know if someone in Quebec got their RPAL recently, in my case initial processing begun january 25th and still at the same stage as of today

I am in Quebec , my application still waiting . it has been 3 month 7 days . told me I have to wait so time . they wont work at covid 19

I am in Quebec. I started my RPAL renewal august 2019 ( 6 months before Jan expiration ) I had to call early Jan 2020 since no news. It was stuck at the SQ who requested that one of my reference call them. Call was done the next day and, 3 weeks after I received my RPAL, one week late after the expiring of my old PAL.

So I suggest you call the CFC for inquiry first. They will transfer you to the SQ. When you get hold of the person who has your file, it should go faster. Note it was a renewal, not a new RPAL.

Hi there,
I just submitted my renewal for last week, did it on line. I don’t recall a section asking for references this time around. Dis I miss that section by chance, i do remember thinking where is the reference section. Did you renew on line ?
