Percussion caps

Word is that there is 10,000#s of powder awaiting clearance to be distributed across the nation.... Nothing on caps though. Saw 2000 to 2400 caps for sale at Heffley rendevous all have been sold by 2 today to various shooters.

I use #11 on my Pieta 1862 with no problem

I have a bunch of antique caps as far back as the 1870's recently I've using RWS caps from the 60's still work fine, The empty boxes are collectable The problem is caps can't be mailed or I'd put some up for sale

one of my 1858's works with 10 and 11, the other is more reliable with 11's... one is pietta and i think the other is a navy arms...

It's preferable to use the correct size caps as they seal the nipple to prevent chain fires.

Most multiple discharges are from the blast at the nipple getting to cylinders with loose caps or where they have fallen off.

Finally someone agrees with me. I shot cap&ball for 20 years and realized grease over the ball just causes a huge mess with very little down the barrel. A proper size ball, 454 for a .44 revolver shaving a ring of lead is water proof. a #10 Cap works much better. I have many of both but out of shooting BP guns. Just bought 1 lb. of Pyrodex P as it was the only powder left, I'll use it in my 45 Colt brass as I scored 2000 large pistol primers.

Friend asked me about a first muzzle loader and I suggested a cap lock over a flinter for a newbie. Now I find that percussion caps are near impossible to find. :(

Considering the current cap shortage I'm pretty happy with my flintlock. Got a good supply of lead balls and powder and a handful of flints should keep me going forever.

I ordered #10 and 11 tap-o-cap kits and 3 bags of priming compound off that .22lr sharp shooter and it took about 2 weeks to arrive here in 100mile house. I haven’t even opened the packaging yet.

I put Track of the Wolf nipples on my two Pietta 1860 Armies and have shot them for years at Cowboy Action matches and I’ve never had a cap jam, chain fire, or lose a cap. Rumour has it that the Italians designed their nipples for a common European cap that isn’t made anymore or just isn’t available anywhere else. Their nipples fit regular caps well enough to be mostly reliable for plinking but when you’re competing your revolver better go bang when you need it to.

I put Slix-Shot nipples on my Pietta 44 1862 #11 caps fit snug never had a cap jam like the old factory nipples, I've been using caps from my antique cap box collection still working perfect after 60 years

As others have said, but better nipples (I use totw stainless). Replacement USA made nipples are made to fit Remington no.10 or CCI no.11.

Buy either of those caps and you'll be fine.

With my pietas, clearance to seat caps isn't great. It's easier to use an off-gun reloading stand.
