Gebruder Merkel combination gun model 210/250E made in 1961. Primary barrel set is 16/70 full over 7x57R and the Secondary set is 16/70 full over 16/70 modified. Scope is a Hensoldt diavari in claw mounts. All bores are like new and both sets of bbl's are serial number matcing with the same DOM as the receiver.

I have the original buttplate, but I went with a pachmayr 0.6 pad because it made the rifle fit me a bit better and the toe is less likely to get broken off in the field, but the pad is fitted to the butt, no vice-versa, so the original plate can be put back on at any time.

VERY happy with this acquisition. Planning on taking it on my white tail hunt in New Brunswick this year so that if I shoot a deer on day 1, I can still hunt birds for the rest of the week with the second bbl set ;)

What do you guys think?

NICE! Very Nice indeed. So much old world hand craftsmanship went into that set. Must have taken a long time to build.

The plate is brass and it's to hold cartridges. The larger ones are for 7x57R rounds and the smaller ones are for .22 Long. Whoever had the gun, at one time owned a 16 gauge insert to fire .22's. Alas, I don't have that piece.

The gun was bought in Germany last year by a local gunsmith in a batch of 5 similar guns. He kept a nice drilling and sold off the remainder. I had first pick ;) NOT CHEAP.

I love those firearms, I have an old 16 SxS made in Suhl by some custom smiths in the mid 40's, as far as anyone can tell, the craftsmanship and fit are amazing. Not only that but dang do they point and shoot well!

Wow old buddy, really nice. When in NB you'll have to get all decked out in traditional German hunting attire eh? Will be interested to see how it groups with the 7X57R barrel. Again, nice score pal.

Very nice. I hope as someone else asked, that you can post accuracy results for the 7X57 barrel. I have always been impressed with some of these firearms.

Using some old mixed 173gn RWS rounds from the 160's, I was getting about 2" groups from the sandbags yesterday. I have some new 150gn NORMA that I have not tried yet, but for hunting purposes, the old RWS stuff will get used up as I can easily live with 2 MOA.

Actually, they still DO make them like that, but you could expect to pay about $8,000-$10,000 for a new Merkel combo set. Good used high quality European arms are a great value IMHO.
Congratulations on your acquisition! I'm sure you will have fun using it.
I have a similar set ( the only real difference is the engraving) I have been using for a few years. it is VERY versatile, well made, and a pleasure to hunt with. Here are a few pictures to whet your appetite as you take yours to the field for the first time!
Waidmannsheil!

Great looking Merkel!

Mine's has mig-grade engraving. They had a basically unadorned version and also made a deluxe version, generally characterized by game scenes on the flats.

Merkel re-tolled in the late 1990's and most of their models were re-named. The 210/250E became the 2010D and apart from more pieces being CNC machined prior to final fitting, it's basically the same gun. Also, they now only make them in 12 and 20 - they dropped the 16 gauge and 28 gauge models a few years back - too bad as I think the 16 is the most versatile of the lot.

As mentioned, they cost close to 10K new with dual barrels as mine is set up. I got mine for the "buddy price" of $3000 - the seller was asking $3400.
