Very nice work Gunnar :)

How does one decide which barrel length gives the best feel/balance when you can't hold them too compare?

Gunnar which barrel length do you prefer for balance and have you tried a 4 5/8" or 5" barrel lengths yet? edit to add; Ike prefers the 5sh" length

I want to have it be the shortest barrel length that gives me the best balance. I'm not really as concerned about velocity loss with the shorter barrel as much as I want the barrel length that gives me the best balance and pointability.

Gunnar your sight ramp solves the look that I didn't want. "YES" I'm going to get you to do this for me right away. I just have to decide if it is going to be to my existing gun or if I'm just going to buy one of your's. I'll call you and discuss the different options with you. I do need to get rid of my 6" 629 first unless we can work out a trade that is workable for both of us.

I just checked out Gunnar's web site and saw the 3 different lengths together. The 4.25" does look very good....

Hey Gunnar, the shorty looks great.I have a question though, Does it still have the awful trigger, that every Ruger revolver I've ever tried, has.I'd love to have a shorty 454, but am still in love with the S&W trigger on revolvers.
This one has a really slick trigger, and it's never been touched.

I just talked to Gunnar this afternoon...

I'll be sending my gun up to him as soon as possible to get it cut into the 4.25" or maybe 5" "oh man" which length do I go with.

4.25", the best choice of the two :)

OK 4.25" but when I purchase a new SRH to replace the longer barreled one which is 7.5" now do I go with the 7.5" again or the 9.5" model?

Dont bother with a longer one to replace the one you are having shortened. The only one you will ever use is the shorty :)

But I have a Bushnell 3200 2X-6X long eye relief scope that needs at least a 5 1/2" barrel to use it.

I have the scope for this handgun for "ahh yeah load developement yeah thats it that the reason that I have it"..... ;)

Ok all kidding aside I am going to sell my 6" 629 44mag so will have a few extra dollars to put towards another handgun anyway. I do need to have 2 powerful handguns because my son is taking geology in college and I'm going to help him get his ATC this coming summer.

Actually I have 2 10mm's, 2 45 Colt's and I want to finish off with 2 454 Casull's.

I'm going to look around and see what is available next week.

The recoil will totally depend on the loads used.

The hot Win factory 300gr loads should have a fairly good snap to them and contrary to common belief the heavy cast loads of 360gr and up actually recoil a lot less than the 300gr ones.

My plan is to use 395gr cast bullets and Jae-Bok Young's 420gr cast bullets in the shorter barrel. I'm thinking they will result in less recoil but unbelievable penetration. The 395's should be able to do 1200fps to 1250fps and the 420's should be able to be loaded to at least 1100fps and hopefully 1150fps.

I can hardly wait to try them out in the shorter barrel.......

There is nothing like a 454 Casull going off in the palm of your hands and then seeing a huge hole in the target. The recoil is awesome to experience but it is definately not more than a fellow can handle.

The Ruger SRH as far as I am concerned is the largest handgun that can be carried easily and they are bullet proof.....

I'm now starting to lean towards the 9.5" barrel length for the new SRH and if I am not happy with it send it to Gunnar to cut it down to 7" or 7.5" but put the same front sight style rib on it as his shorter barrel models. I talked to him today and he figures he can do the rib for the longer barrels as well. It will be a little trickier to do though due to the taper of the barrel.
