Avro Lancaster bomb load, five rows of 1000 lb bombs, four per row.The Lancaster could carry a typical bomb load of around 14,000lbs weight in its cavernous bomb bay, for over 1,600 miles at 200mph. It could also be modified to carry the 22,000 “Grand Slam”.

Those bombs look like they have just come out of 50 years storage except for the tail fins.

B29.PNG

A 22,000 lb Grand Slam "earthquake bomb" partially inside a B-29 Superfortress' bomb bay. Despite already having a large bomb bay, the B-29's bays had to be modified to carry this huge bomb, which partially protruded out of the bay doors.

Just thought I would add some MG 'generic' imagery. I guess I can post here to make a change from 'pure' Imperial German MG threads/posts. This is purely because of the helmet!

sofar, harbour defence, other sonar systems...

Before the Mercury spacecraft Liberty Bell 7 could be recovered, it's Sofar bomb had to be defused and removed.

The craft was 4900 metres down for nearly four decades.

I am guessing it was something proprietary as the Mk 22 Sofar device used 4 lb of TNT - sounds too heavy for a spacecraft. Whatever it was, the story is it was a 'dud.' It sounds plausible.
