Picture of the day

Above would be Torpedo Bomber TBF Avanger, possibly from VF-84 USS Bunker Hill(CV-14) Aircraft Carrier.

It is amazing how much damage this guy could stand and still remain it the air.It looks like damage from ramming -note damage to upper fuselage behind gun turret, missing part of left wing is obvious. To steady it up pilot had to max out left trimmer and it's hardly visible (left side of vertical fin)

I thought the Bunker Hill was CV-17 was it not?

On a side note, there's a real estate agent in Thunder Bay whose name is Bunker Hill. Who names their kid that?!

If he is from Thunder Bay, chances are his last name was originally "Mäki".

That is a pretty large mortar for an FJ team to be jumping with and humping around. My guess is it is a photo from an Italian campaign defensive position with a Heer issued mortar tube and bombs. Just a thought, I could be totally wrong.

After the Crete debaucle I believe the FJ's were typically regulated to use as elite ground infantry, hence they would then be able to be equipped with heavier equipment. There was really nowhere to jump and they were more useful being used as excellent quality infantry.

If the picture was taken in Italy, it could be the Hermann Goering Panzer Parachute Division. They were air force but fought on the ground, fully trained as paratroopers and had heavy equipment- including half tracks etc. They were a real odd-ball division. Their casualty's in Italy were 70% : the division was withdrawn , rebuilt, sent to the Russian front were they took another 80% casualty's.

Say there, Desert Fox, have you read "Rommel's War In Africa" by Wolf Heckmann yet? Sort of lets the air out of the Rommel myth. One of Adolf's pets until he bit the hand that fed him. The OKH crowd sure didn't like him. You'll enjoy it.;)
