Picture of the day

Man, that camp's a feckin' mess. You lot too busy gawping at the future of military aviation to pick up the trash?

Brookwood, I'm glad Grossepapa made it through the war. Just finished reading Mowat's book about the Italian campaign. Sounds awful and then some.

Gibbs, that's the coolest thing I've seen this week. That woulda made a hell of a clang when it hit, and despite the prop being substantially compromised, the Jug Flew On. What a goddamn anvil of a plane they are. Good engineering. :)

Enough talk.

Staged photo, but from back in the day when the CBC wasn't just the best local news station for Toronto, and the Voice of Frustrated Old Hippies.

(Man, there's a cat who took personal grooming seriously. He's positively aerodynamic...)

"A Sikorsky evacuating wounded soldiers from Iwo Jima. If you didn't know this was World War II, you easily could mistake this picture for Vietnam 20 years later. This is one of those anachronistic shots that could fool even an expert. See below for another photograph of this incident for confirmation.

There is a similar looking prop blade from a Navy Spad in the National Museum of Naval Aviation that took a hit somewhere north of the DMZ in Viet Nam. According to the write up the pilot never felt a thing an didn't know he'd been hit until it was pointed out by his crew chief.

Regarding the holed P47 prop I bet if that hole was at the props leading or trailing edge the prop would have self destructed and the pilot and plane lost. Super lucky jug pilot (and yet another example of fine German aerial marksmanship).

Worth noting that this was in March 1945, before fighting on the island had ceased. Another pic, this time showing Suribachi.
