Picture of the day

My heart goes out to the plight of the animals used in war. They are used up and tossed away in the most horrendous manner. Human lives as well but the animals fared much worse IMHO.

It is said that General Lee surrendered at Appomattox the day he realized that he had not enough horses to move artillery & ambulances anymore with no hope of replenishing the supply in the south (the north still had an almost unlimited supply). He still had lots of able-bodied men willing to carry on (altho some were just going home because they knew the cause was hopeless at that point) but no horse-power left.

And not just domesticated animals, but wildlife and their habitat generally. In the Falklands, for example, the British expended a number of torpedoes on suspected submarine contacts that turned out to be whales. A drop in the bucket compared to what has happened in much more violent, long-lived conflicts.

I must be out of the loop...a K98 with a straight bolt handle? I guess I better try to keep up.

It's a captured VZ24, not a K98k.

This is likely in France. The Wehrmacht and SS re-equipped after Poland with Czech equipment until the german industrial base could catch up. LOTS of VZ24's were in the french invasion vanguard, and many stayed there until captured by the allies on the atlantic wall.

So how closely tied with the guys on the ground were the HS129 pilots?

Close enough that some Wiesenheimer stenciled an Infantry Assault Badge on this one. Betcha he pushed hard to have a bayonet mount installed on the gun...

The moral of story is that the common people always pay for what their fellow citizens do, and what their government does in their name.

"What good fortune for rulers that men do not think!" Adolf Hitler.

Cocked and locked?

Army troops with the eagle on the left arm?

Close as I can figure, he is military police

Got it, found a picture of Order Police rounding up Jews in 1942. Dressed the same with Eagle on left arm, police badge over left pocket. Order Police were used to pacify occupied rear areas.

So he'd be in/of the einsatzgruppen? Hang 'em high.

Perhaps. But Police Battalions were not part of the SS per se. If I had to guess, I would say these men are with the SS Polizei Division. They retained police rank and insignia (hence the collar badges) but had SS uniforms (eagle on left sleeve).

Seriously, what are we looking at here? This pic has me scratching my head... The straight bolt K98, the obscured breast insignia, the SS eagle on the arm, the camera being worn like its a Sunday walk... Whats the scoop with this pic?

I believe you are right. His rank is Oberschütze. He wears the SS eagle on his sleeve above his rank badge, but Heer/Police collar tabs, look at his cap badge (stuck under his shoulder board), the half visable looks just like the Police badge.

If they are SS Polizei Division, they would have been equipped with second line weapons, such as Czech rifles, until late in the war.

I have flown it in war thunder. Its a beast but I wouldn't want to be flying it if I where to encounter another airplane. Simply not enough engine power for a dog fight, especially with such a heavy cannon in the front of the plane. Some intense optics on that plane too, and all the gauges are outside the cockpit on the side of the engines!
