Picture of the day

That's either a joint he's holding or a Balkan Sobranie.
I've tried to understand and make sense out of Balkan history, up to and including the last Balkan war and I'm just as confused as before I started; maybe even more. I've even asked people from the Balkans to 'splain and all I get is blaming the other guys. And I thought that the Spanish Civil War was a cluster f___k .....

Chetniks are a good example, fought against and with the Germans on occasion.

Germany impressed fishing boats into the Kriegsmarine during the mar. They were dubbed "Kriegsfischkutter" or "KFK" and did some useful work, mostly as AA platforms.

I agreed.

I was deployed to Kosovo last year and not much has changed in that part of the world. Tons of historical sites and a lot of history going back to Roman times, even back then it was more of a backwards cross roads that every new invader crossed and no one really held on to for very long.

The Croatians and Slovenians seem to have sorted themselves out and are stable countries, the rest of the area is still in various stages of "basketcase" some beautiful country, and I must say Kosovo is nicer then Bosnia.

Now what Boss Hogg didn't know was that 'ol Cooter had stayed up all night long adding a special surprise to the General.Yes sir, the day of the big race would leave the folks of Hazzard County plenty to talk about for years to come...

My dad told a story about volunteering to go on a night raid or something, manning the bow gun on one of these. Guess they ran into some opposition and it got quite hairy. Reason they needed volunteers was, cause in case of combat, the bow gunner was the first target. :)

At work we have people from Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania and Serbia. Even they can't explain what happened. What you get out of them most of the time is the blame game. It always was someone else, the USA, EU, Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks, and so on.

Glad I never was accepted for deployment to Kosovo.

Kosovo is funny, the government is so dysfunctional, most of the major players have been arrested for war crimes at some point in time. Toss in organized crime, which also had all sorts of links into the 1990's conflict and its a basketcase that really has no acceptable solution. Oh and not all the EU countries accept that Kosovo is an independent country.

I would go back, the 6 months tax free is hard to say no to.... :)

Oh and I had a few Swiss officers working for me at the airport. Good people

I've seen a tv show that theorizes that the problems in the Balkans and the Middle East (Israel/"palestine") can be blamed on kids staying home with their grandmothers while the parents go out and work. The bitter old women instill the hate of their youth into the kids today. Most logical theory I've heard. Well that, and religious fanaticism.

Thing is, #### in the Balkans goes back hundreds of years, these guys originated the Blood feud, you're supposed to get even for some wrong done one of your long dead ancestors. Seems civilization, as we know it, never really took root there.

the balkans ......its complicated ............the balkans as well as most of the eastern European countries was the front line during the last islamic incursion.

if you been there you can see the turkish castles/forts and the western ones .......alot of bad crap happened ........both sides

Viewer discretion is advised: Don't watch past the 4 minute mark if seeing the underside of a pretty bird get sanded off on tarmac causes your guts to churn and your toes to curl in on themselves.

No amount of dry cleaning would sort out those flight suits after that landing.

Beautiful landing - very smooth. Surprised they didn't put it on the grass to minimize damage.

Pretty good article in Smithsonian Air and Space a couple months ago about the development of the F111. Jack of all trades aircraft, meant for Navy and USAF use. Hooks were, of course, standard on the Navy birds, not sure about USAF examples, but it appears the RAAF uses Navy-spec aircraft.

Or did. They retired their F111s in 2010, if Wikipedia isn't lying. Going to F-35s, using F-18 Super Hornets in the interim. Sound familiar?

RCN Fleet Air Arm Tracker flightcrew nicknamed their flight uniforms "poopy suits". This might have something to do with the legendary loiter time of the type. Maximum flight time: up to nine hours.

Somewhere, someone has newsreel footage of a flight of three Trackers flying at maximum speed beneath the middle span of the Angus L.Macdonald Bridge, at masthead height towards the open ocean circa early 1970's.

In that era it was still ok to set aside a day called:'Armed Forces Day."

On a whale watching tour out of Ucluelet, our boat was buzzed by a flight of Trackers at wave top height. One aircraft actually clipped wave tops with it's wing tip. This was just at the time before they were decommissioned, very much a joy ride. We could see the smiling faces of the aircrew quite well.

Quite a thrilling display. Made you think about what it must have been like to be attacked by such aircraft sporting 20 mm cannons, rockets and bombs .....

While on course at CFB Borden, I watched a parade rehearsal from my quarters' window.

The Tracker trundled along in front, followed by the band, followed by the marching troops.

When the Tracker got to the saluting base, it's right wing folded up into a simulated salute.

Neat, and memorable.
