and a modern version is a bunch of ABS pipe bundled up and dropped in the ditch to create a crossing / breach.
Don't think so. From reading through Carius's "Tigers in the Mud" and some of the ad-hoc solutions they were coming up with in Russia, I would be more inclined to think it was for shoring up ditches and soft ground to make specific routes more passable for the tanks.

those are serious AAA guns.
much has been made of the german 88, but all the major powers had similar guns. the only difference is that the germans pointed theirs at tanks as well.
