Cool pic!!
I've heard of the "wing flip" technique when dealing with V-1's--but figured it must be rare as V-1's were faster than most fighters.
Apparently not--400 mph was about the speed of a V1.

Very interesting...how do you think that photo was taken? I have doubts.

In his book, "The Big Show", Pierre Clostermann talks about performing the 'wing flip' flying his Tempest. He mentioned that it was possible with a Spitfire, but it needed to be in a dive to the point where the airspeed flexed the wings sometimes rendering the aircraft US (unserviceable, not American!)

You own an armoured car. You feel inadequately armed. What to do?

Subtle? No, not really. Loudly morale-building? Yeah, sure.

Here's the field expedient version...

I got a kick out of that...

"Let's see...while we are developing this, we don't want to be inside the ARMOURED VEHICLE when we test fire. Let's rig up a remote control so we can be outside the ARMOURED VEHICLE for test firing. Because 25 feet away outside the ARMOURED VEHICLE in a light jacket will be safer."

I hadn't twigged to this until you mentioned it, Tony, but I imagine the buunged fender was a result of the firing of the rockets.

Before:

Low elevation. Backblast clears the fenders nicely. "Bet we could get some additional range if we cranked her up a titch..."

During - note the fender taking abuse:

After - Bet the other side is just as bunged...

"Goddamn it, the RSM's gonna be pissed. Who's brilliant idea was this?"

They really were just kids, weren't they?

Canadian Infantrymen (left to right) Pvt. Art Robertson of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and Pvt. Ken Mardon of the Highland Light Infantry aboard an LCI(L) of the 2nd Canadian (262nd RN) Flotilla are photographed in good spirits en route to Juno Beach at Bernières-sur-Mer in France on D-Day; the Allied invasion in Normandy.

Censor got a little hyperactive on this one.

What army is not comprised of "just kids"? I was just over 17 when I enlisted, as were most of my peers. It isn't until the pool of youth has been bled dry that older, mature men are called up. Young men die in wars started by old men.

More details and some neat photos on the rocket launching staghounds.

Thanks, Icy Balls. Excelent link with plenty of info. Appreciate it. :)

If you're going to do a job, better to be thorough about it.
