Picture of the day

The 30 in M2/AN Browning machine guns used in aircraft were lightened significantly and as such had a lighter mechanism made it faster firing. About 1000-1200 rpm
Late in the bush war the Brownings, for a reason unknown to me, were fitted with full length aluminum barrel jackets. Captured terrorists reported that they were deathly afraid of these 'new' machine guns because of the huge barrel diameter!

That and when somehow terrorists got hold of an army/police radio and they were subsequently captured & interrogated they divulged that they were really afraid of the soldier 'ROGER' as he was everywhere....

Come to think of it, I've never seen or heard of an M2 chambered for anything other than the 50BMG.

After your post, I read M1919s built for use in aircraft were lighter and fired faster. But, I know when John Browning designed the M1919 the cyclic rate was 800+rpm and it was later slowed down to alleviate wear and tear on internal parts and barrels, and make it more suitable for field use.

Where do you stand on the relative uselessness of military headgear? Which is the more worthless, non-functional hat? The beret or the fez?

There's no way to wear one of these and not look like you lost your smoking jacket somewhere.
The beret is the most useless piece of headgear ever worn; just sits there like a cow patty.
