Evidently you've never heard of the MG-3. Same basic design of the MG-42, but modernized a little and with a caliber change.

What did you think the "G3" part of my post referred to? Oh, I'm sorry, I missed a letter "M". Did that throw you off?

Now that's an interesting photo. You almost never see the optical sight for the .50 in use by our side, but obviously the Germans liked it: it reminded them of the sight on the MG34/42!

Standard drill with the 42 was to fire no more than 250 rounds from a barrel, then change barrels. Each gun was issued with 3 spares, changing took about 3 seconds (I have done it in 4).

They followed this program religiously. As a result, it was extremely rare to run into a 42 with a bum barrel.

250 rounds from a 42 is a barrel change every 10 to 12 seconds of firing time.
