Incredible and haunting. These guys know they are losing but they will never give up. The eyes say veteran.
It should remind us what the true costs are..
One sporter and one with a sporter butt stock, interesting. The sporters MkIII with bought up early in the war to arm training establishments. It is interesting to see them still serving this late in the war. I assume the butt stock is something the unit armourer did to repair a rifle.

I have an old documentary at home where they interview a German Lieutenant. He said that at the start of the battle of the bulge, his assignment was to blitz through and take 5 towns, one of them being...
Bastogne.
His force consisted of 3 armored cars, with 3 men each. At one point they were attacked and his buddy in one of the other cars chickened out and failed to protect his flank. He said at that point in the war it was understandable and he didn't hold it against the guy. Later he said that they pretty much ignored new officers coming in, that he and the other "old veterans" were tired of seeing them get killed and replaced before they got to know anyone. IIRC he was 21 at the time.
A very nice piece of history..Here is one that would be the same as the ones on the left, obviously not one in the picture, but it is a matching 1945 LB

That seems unreasonable ... or maybe they were really short of infantry at that time9 men and 3 vehicles to take 5 towns. At 21.

It was a last desperate push. He might not have been the only group, but may gave been ordered out on his own. Just send as much personnel and equipment into the bulge and push through. Cause chaos.

Corporal Pruner with Machine gun and Piat Gun
Technically a Thompson M1A1 and he's a Hasty P. This would be in Italy.
A Thompson M1, to be precise. The M1A1 has the ears for the rear sight.
