I suspect he's been instructed to smile by the photographer. This wasn't unheard of in those days. You don't want your mother back home to know how awful you're actually feeling. Neither does the propaganda machine.

I think its more like the guy behind the MG is about to feel what its like to fall backwards onto his back from a height of 10-12 feet and have a MG and tripod land on his chest when Dumbo rears up as the hot casings land on his head/back. Good idea-bad plan moment here.

Yep. And the main thing to notice there is that it's different people in those two photos. The guys mit Boomenschticken were officers but the schmoes mit Shkinnenkniven are ratings (the cook probably being one of them).

Of course, if the officers were really unpopular, the cook could always serve them a nice traditional German dish made with fresh-off-the-bear meat for supper -- like Liver with Onions...
