Please Help Me Keep My .357

Hello, I've mostly lurked on here for years.. But my name is Ian, and I'm looking for some help regarding my S&W Model 19 .357 revolver. Its black with dark wood grips.

It has come into my possession by inheritance, and unless I can get a new barrel for it, I think I have to surrender it- Very uncool.

It's a 4'' barrel, which comes in at 102mm, 3mm short of the law.

Can anyone help?

I'm sure others will know far more than me but if you inherited it don't you qualify to get a 12.6? (or was it not from family?)
 
It was my Uncles. My Dad and I both have our Restricted and Non-Restricteds... I guess the Gov't gave my Dad "X" amount of time to comply. My Dad doesn't really have interest in the .357, in which he'd then give to me.
Are there such things as replacement barrels?

That'd be my old man. He seems to recall my uncle having an "SH" license, which to our understanding was before the prohibited class...

I guess the rules are my Dad has 5 years to comply.

3mm, what a joke. I can tell you one thing... from my cold dead hands.
 
Has it been to a verifier? 3mm is tight, if it hasn't been verified you may just well have a restricted firearm despite what the cert says. If the verifier can vouch that it's a restricted length the cert is changed/amended...and the gun is yours (with a change of ownership and the other CFO formalities).

*edit* it can of course be rebarreled, but IMHO it would have to be a pretty special Smith to go through that expenditure.
 
I was in a similar situation a few years ago. My father had a mint S&W Combat Masterpiece model 15 4"bbl. They only way I could keep it was to have it re-barrelled but that would cost more than what the HG was worth on the market.
I really wanted to keep it (mostly for sentimental reasons) but it did not make sense monetarily so it got sold. I did get to keep the mint "T"-series Browning Hi-Power:)

Yeah, I tend to agree. Maybe sell it--a 4" Model 19 is worth maybe $450-$500 I'd say if it's in good shape--and take that plus the cash that you would've spent on a new barrel and get something non-restricted.

Oh, and #1bcshooter is correct--a prohib needs to be pre-1946 to be inheritable.
 
Does your Model 19 have a pinned barrel? Which 19 is it -- there is a model number inside the cylinder crane recess on the frame, usually. 19- something. If the barrel is pinned, changing is much easier than if not. PM me if it's a pinned barrel.

Last I heard blued barrels were more scarce than unicorn poop. On the other hand aftermarket barrels are still around since these are still popular guns for use in PPC conversions. Brownells lists a big slug of a thing for $125. With some more work from a machinist the profile could be machined down to something reasonable and the metal blued.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. But certainly the CHEAPER option would be to sell it as a prohibited and just buy one which is restricted.

I've got two guns that were prohibited but which were bored out and sleeved to make them restricted. One has a button of stainless welded to the nose and the other uses a press fit extension with the liner holding it. But because it makes the wall thickness of the original barrel fairly thin in the portion where it is threaded into the frame I'm not planning on shooting any .357Mag through it. And the other is only chambered for .38Spl anyway. But as long as you don't mind losing the magnum ability this could be an option as well. But again it would not be a cheap way to go. Selling it and buying a restricted would be cheaper.
