Magpul PMAG M3: First Impressions
"Must Have" item for 2013? Definitely! ... Availability? Unobtanium
So it probably doesn't come as any big surprise that I managed to get my hands on some of Magpul's latest-generation PMAGs - the PMAG M3. This was one accessory that I wasn't willing to be the last to the trough for...
Magpul already has a fairly detailed explanation on the differences and technical improvements between the previous generation (now called the PMAG MOE) and the new PMAG M3, so I'll keep this quick review limited to my initial first impressions.

First and foremost, the new PMAG M3 feels different - and in a great way. Just handling each generation you can notice that the texture has been enhanced; it's the same - yet different. The ribbing is also more pronounced (similar to the first generation PMAG), and the gripping on the front and spine of the magazine makes the PMAG M3 so easy to handle and index that you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.
The follower has been redesigned and is now designated gray to distinguish it from previous versions. The motion is unbelievably smooth, and I can already tell by messing around with it that it's going to run flawlessly. The baseplate is a new slim form that just feels more natural. A big improvement that Magpul hasn't really accentuated is the redesign of the dust covers. They're much easier to install and remove and in addition, don't have the tendency to 'slip off' when fully loaded like the previous generation.
Two additional features are the over-travel insertion stop and marking pen matrix.
The dimensions on the PMAG M3 are essentially the same, and the PMAG M3 weighs 154 grams (8 grams heavier than its predecessor). From a compatibility standpoint, these will run in all existing platforms that accept AR magazines - including the HK MR223 (an added bonus for HK owners).
Magpul has really outdone themselves on this one - and totally exceeded expectations. It's worth the slight difference price and then some!
Note: As the current availability on polymer and metal AR15 magazines is still insane, the new PMAg M3s could take a long time to begin trickling up into Canada. For that reason, I'm still keeping all my PMAG and Lancer-AWF polymer magazines.
