Pointless putting a 100$ scope on a 300-550$ rifle?

I'm thinking of shooting from 50-100yrds with a savage or CZ 452 and I already own a 100$ bushnell 3x9 32mm. Is this scope worthy of such rifles or not? Thanks,

why not ? Try it out and see, you might be surprised ! Or else, you'll then be asking " is it worth putting a 600.00 scope on a $300-550 rifle ?"

It also depends on what you're using it for. If your just punching paper I wouldn't change it. If its for hunting you could always do better.

my 2Cents..

I would say that is backwards. Almost anything works OK for hunting, while target shooting is much more demanding of optics than hunting is.

OP, you could try it and see, but if you know what quality optics look like you will be disappointed with your cheap scope.

As long as the scope is working properly it'll be fine. Had a fixed 4X Tasco I paid $40 BNIB for on my .243 for a few years. Worked just fine.

I think many of us have heard that saying "if you've got a $3,000 rifle and a $100 scope, then you've got yourself a $100 POS" ..........but the truth is that many of the "economy" optics of today leave so many of the past scopes - from the era that comment originated - lightyears away.....

It will certainly work, but if I had the cash and were in your position, I'd get a better scope and sell or keep the 3x9, as I prefer an adjustable objective on a rimfire bolt action. A bushnell banner 4x12 or 6x18 works pretty well for me. Of course, it depends on the type of shooting you do. In general, for gophers and target shooting a more powerful like that is preferred. For rabbits and plinking, the lower power scopes are fine.

My Savage MKIIF came with a Bushnell 3-9 x 32AO Sportview (a bottomfeeder for sure). For some reason, it shoots just as well as my CZ Style and Varmint both of which wear Bush Banner 4-12 x 40AOs. On a good day, these babies have done 1.5 MOA at 100meters with Winchester Dynapoints.

FWIW, the MKIIF shot a few 1 MOA first time at the range, but I never duplicated this feat. I thought I hit the jackpot as neither of the CZs ever broke 1.5 inches.

It may do the job proprely but with good glass you always pull the full potential out of you rifle and on the long run you are never at lost, i'd rather have a 400.00 scope on a 100.00 rifle than vice versa... My 0.02 cents. JP.

I bought a 190 some time ago, and it had a cheap simmons on it.
I haven't even shot it yet, but a friend took it to the range, and shot three different 5 shot groups of just about 1/2" at 100 with it.

A lot of people can't shoot that tight with a good rifle and scope set up, let alone a decent rifle with a cheap scope on it!!
I left the Simmons on there for silhouette fun!:D
Of curse however, for every decent cheap scope you find there are likely 20 if them that are in fact lousy at the same price!

I've put $10 air rifle scopes on .22's worth $200+ ... They didn't stay on them forever, but if it's the scope you have and want to do some shooting, why not do it?

keep in mind though, that quality still makes a difference. fire up an ncstar 10-40x50 and try to get it to focus clearly past 30 power :)

Honestly, though, if you have the scope, you may as well use it if it's a question of the gun sitting unfired until you get a new one. My grandpa put a cheap bell 3-9x40 on his BLR, and it's still sitting in my cabinet with that scope on it. Never felt the need to replace it.

What would a good bang for your buck scope cost for such 22 rifles?

Could I damage the scope (box says rifle/airgun scope on it) if I put it on a 30 caliber rifle?

Cheap scopes work just fine. Unless you spend a lot of time looking through a scope and need repeatability then cheap scopes may be the way to go. Most guys use a 22 very little, never touch the turrets once it's sighted in and never have trouble. I have cheap scopes and expensive scopes they serve a different purpose. The cheap scopes are just fine on an occasional plinker 22, especially if you all ready have one.
