Pops is turnin 60, new rifle present Model 70...wait made in Portugal???

I picked up a fn built usa made rifle a few years ago its pretty darn good. Just picked up a Portugal made super grade and it is nicer then the american one. Fit and finish seems a little better and wood fit is also better. I would not hesitate to get another.

Nope no troll here I just used to sell them and I remember when they were 400-500 bucks and they haven't improved since then but having said that winchesters were 600-800 bucks and although they have increased in price so has the overall quality of the firearm.

I will agree with this. The action feels like its made from recycled budwiser cans. The sako a7 and black bear I looked at didn't feel any better. I didn't see $1000+ in those guns 6-700 sure.

For the guys who think that the Portugal assembled M70's are junk don't really know much about guns……or have even seen a Portugal M70.

Shame on you guys for steering the OP from getting his dad a great gun!

Get your Dad the Model 70,....don't be worried about the "assembled in Portugal" thing. I have a lot of Brownings and some are Belguim made "assembled in Portugal",....the assembled in Portugal guns have excellent fit, finish, function, and quality.
On another thread that was discussing Model 70 Super Grades, a guy posted that he had a Portugal assembled Model 70 SG and the quality was better than other all american made Model 70s that he owned.

FN/Browning have been assembling guns in Portugal from Belgian parts for a long time now. I see this as a complete non-issue.

Hey guys,

Thanks a ton for the info. I think that I will go the Model 70 route.

I really have nothing against Portugal, I guess I get my hackles up when I hear tell of outsourcing... Them's are the times.

Time to put down the money on an order!

If you're dad likes model 70's go ahead and buy one, yes they are assembled in Portugal, but that doesn't make them bad, in fact they seem to be excellent in terms of fit, finish, and function. It would not surprise me if in 50 years todays model 70's are looked on as heirloom quality guns that are highly sought after. Personally I want a new model 70 Safari Express in 458 win mag (although I would rechamber it to .458 Lott).

Speaking of Portugal, this thread reminds me, I need to pick up a new bottle of Port I'm almost out.

Exactly. I think it was the early 70's when FN set up an assembly plant in Portugal. A great many Brownings have been assembled there. Apparently the Model 70's are assembled in this plant.

Mmm port! I guess it would be fitting as we do drink some port at the hunt camp after dinner, when the cigars come out, and the stories get exaggerated.

I am tracking a M70 round the country like a gut shot deer now. Thanks for the advice boys.

My new winchester model 70 is the best build rifle ive ever owned, compared to tikka, sako, and kimber. Most accurate as well. Mines a coyote outback in 308, has the B&C stock on it. Fluted barrel, dream to shoot and 0.75" all day with cheap hornady 150gr bullets

I found a good deal super grade in 270WSM... I am not too sure about the WSM caliber, we are not long range hunters here in Central Ontario, we mostly brush hunt for Deer and Moose, where you can take the odd 150 to 300 yard shot across a swamp but that is about it. The most common shout would be in the 50 to 100 yards neighborhood.

Brand new Model 70 30/06 purchased and in the mail.

The model is the featherweight grade 3, does anybody know what the grade 3 is? Is it better furniture? Polished blue?

Thanks again for all the assistance guys.
