possible heads up for sks owners

Cashiers working the register also have to be 18 yrs old to sell/ring through ammo and firearms. Something to be aware of at CT as they employ a lot of minimum wage earning 17 yr old Cashiers.

Interesting. CT that sell firearms. I know of a one or two in extreme southeastern Ontario that has started to and I was suprised to hear that. Though that corperate made it a full on policy not to sell arms anymore. The one here in Milton doesn't even sell ammo. And other than at this time of the year has very little in the way of hunting stuff. Even bows and arrows are rare.

I'm guessing that it's due to either someone being an idiot and messing up his gun or that it wasn't properly cleaned; if it's due to a "full auto" fire issue.

Everyone is blaming CT/RCMP for overreacting to the slamfire, but what about Silverdale's RSOs that flipped out enough to call the authorities over a malfunction?

I love the place, but that's seriously ridiculous.

Never understood the SKS bashers, for under $200 it just can't be beaten, its accurate enough, cheap enough, and fun to shoot.
Do some people hate it just because its not Black, because its Russian or Chinese and they have that retarded fear of 'Commies' still in 2014?

I just joined the SKS club last week (BIG PROPS FOR VLAD AT WEST RIFLE!! You Da Man!). For as much as I wanted a collectable laminate, all matching unissued :)...I figured that I wanted something that I could use with out remorse. I wanted to lighten it up and liked the feel of it in a pistol grip config. Vladimir hooked me up with the nicest 1950 Russian Referb already in a black ATI stock that I could have asked for. All most all matching with only electro pencil Hidden on the gas tube and on the lock pin on the bolt!

"SkS not a black rifle" you say... Well fully dressed with rails and a scope, in that ATI stock, it's as black and so called 'scary' as any that I have seen or shot! I love it, it's a hoot to shoot! The valve of that rifle for what we pay for them in Canada is huge! It's a keeper for sure.

I dropped one into an ATI stock myself, fitted muzzle break, and see-all sight, kept my other 3 original.
I like them in both forms,in the ATI stock my 9 year old daughter can easily fire it,plus the ammo is cheap and plentiful.

But did it even happen that way? If there was a slam fire incident at Silverdale, I can totally see the RSO's flipping out and sending the poor sap home but calling in the authorities?...sorry, doesn't ring true...and on other forums I'm seeing rumours that they found some rifles that the mags weren't properly pinned in. Seeing as this is a national stop sell, that makes way more sense to me that it's a mag pinning issue.

Any CT insiders able to confirm?

And the reason for contacting authorities would be?????
Jesus, I wonder who threw this poor soul under the bus. Hearing what I have about Silverdale, not sure I would ever want to visit.

A SKS rifle purchased at Canadian Tire went full auto.
This occured at Silverdale Gunclub
Authorities were contacted
Rifle was seized by said authorities

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the two are related

Shoot straight - chrisco

Never had any issues with my SKS's but, as already said, this was either a slam fire from an improperly cleaned bolt assembly, someone went and buggered up the trigger assembly (not sure how, but it's a one way ticket) or the magazine was improperly pinned. The SKS is by design a semi-auto, but even those that don't own one know they can slam fire if not cleaned properly. It would not be safe to use in full-auto; If the Russian's didn't use it in full-auto, it couldn't be done safely.

As f'd up as the situation is if Silverdale did indeed call the authorities, Silverdale is actually a good place to shoot. I've had nothing but positive experiences there and as long as you behave safely (and have a cool gun) the range safety officers are really friendly and good guys. I'm not defending the action of calling in the heat, but like I said, I've always had what really is exceptional service there, and I can understand them having to be extra tough on safety since its open to the public and not just members.

That being said, what a weak situation for the SKS

just got off the phone...

Pembroke was just informed they have to take the SKS OFF the shelves. there is apparently going to be an investigation as to how "Canadian Tire could have sold a Full Auto rifle".

my best guess... they sold the guy a semi......................... and it wasnt cleaned.....

No doubt.....read about threads on here all the time where the owner went from the gunstore to the shooting range without cleaning or even inspecting a rifle/pistol.
This batch was pretty dirty too, I bought 4 from an online shop and the amount of sand in the dust cover and action would fill a boot lol Would have been a diasaster to shoot one of these like that.
CFC probably informed CT of the incident, head office of CT said pull all the rifles....that would be my guess.

Head office hearing about the slam fire sounds the most likely. As for who cleans them at CT. We don't. We'll wipe them off. But I don't have time to strip and clean everyone of them. Btw tapco'd sks are still for sale at my CT. They aren't the same product number ;)

They never record my info at CT for ammo either.... Last week I picked up a crate of 7.62 that was stacked in the aisle, walked up to the cash, purchased the ammo and then told then informed the cashier that I was walking out of CT with 1300 rounds of 7.62 and nobody checked my PAL... I thought for sure a manager or somebody would get to me before I left, but nope. When I got home I called CT and informed the manager of theit mistake

a friend of mine suffered severely when rock and party reclassified the m-14- he's a native and that m14 was his ONLY rifle- they were all 300 bucks or thereabouts at the time, and he used it to get game for him and his family for the winter- he even went so far as to try to get an exemption through the band lawyer, but they CONFISCATED his gun- so no gun- had it not been for the generosity of his tribe members, the family would have starved

As someone who lives near several Indian reserves, all I can is AS IF...

but even those that don't own one know they can slam fire if not cleaned properly.

BUT.. the problem with wider sales distribution is that not EVERYONE in the general public knows (or cares) to go research their rifle online to find out about common problems.. they expect it to work out of the box as it comes from a "big box store".. first (or maybe a few??) slam fires on one from CT and the unknowning gun owners will freak out, and so will CT.

With the SKS's being sold in CT, you have to ask.. was CT making the right INFORMED decision to sells SKS which are known for slam firing??? did they buy them from a distributor who put in the extra efforts to make sure they were cleaned properly before putting them on CT's shelf..

don't get me wrong, I'm all for getting an SKS at CT, but a gun like the SKS is a risky sell at CT due to the know issues, and how CT might react due to "customer safety" and "Liability" issues..

if Silverdale did indeed call the authorities, Silverdale is actually a good place to shoot.

Actually no.. if Silverdale called the cops then it shows that they actually have no clue on how to handle the situation.. (This is assuming its not an intentional full auto use of the SKS)

A firearm which happens to go "Full Auto", 99% of the time is not a full-auto firearm.. it's a malfunction which can be fixed.. and a safety issue.. neither of which makes the situation illegal in any way..

The safety issue is easy and simple to fix.. stop shooting the gun and go fix it (gun smith or compitent firearms owner who can clean/fix it).. bring it back to test properly (reduced # of rounds to ensure it still not going full auto)

the fixing of the firearm is also a simple fix.. don't use it until you either 1) take it to a gun smith 2) completly understand the issue and why its going full auto, and fix it.. then do a proper test to ensure it does not go full auto again.

The fact that Silverdale "apparently" called the cops is rediculas, shows they have no clue on proper fixing/testing of a firearm.. for a gun range thats almost a SIN..

now I hope all this is a story and not true, but if it was I'd be staying away from there.. (Failure to clean your gun is not a crime.. it's not good decision making, but not against the law..)
