and still not have anything that actually sends rounds down range...I think it was cheaper hanging out in the Black Rifles section and drinking the Colt Kool-Aid...anyone else have any money pit build stories?.

Dude, I don't know if I am coming or going anymore...that PGW marked SN-3 is nice but I am not using it now, I may keep the S/A Williams bottom metal, it is super nice and makes the factory stuff look like it was made by an bunch of grade 8 shop class kids...

I saved my self the unending pitfalls of building a precision rifle .I manned up and bought a factory built rifle with everything I needed saved a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$ doing it that way and I have something that I can use right away and not have it spend its life at the Gunsmiths or sitting as parts in the safe

I always flog all my leftover bits, unless I think I'll use them again. If I wasn't going to use that USO scope, it'd be gone so fast... way too much money to sit on a shelf.

How much you want for that Eagle scope/crown cover? :D

I'm trying my darndest to have a money pit but not sure it's working as well for me as it is for the rest of you:)
my first is a 6.5x55 30" shilen match barrel should be here in a month or so.(still collecting lapua brass and trying to decide on some seating dies a good trigger and rings) It's going on top of a stevens action and stock(not sure if i'm gonna bubba the stock myslef or find a different stock). optics are not the best or most expensive but will work well for me and my purposes elite 4200 6-24x50 Tactical. total on that package so far is $1300.
The next i decided to cheat a bit and found a savage bvss-s in 223. already bedded and came with a picitany rail. I chose the bvss because i really like the stock and a 1.5lb accutrigger is nothing to complain about. just need to replace the barrel with a 26" shilen match barrel and a scope probably another 4200 unless i can find something better for the same price. when done i will have $1400 into it. i guess i'm not building a true custom. someone have some advice??

Sparrow, welcome to the deep end of the pool. You have a whole whack of nice gear. Hopefully, it will turn into a useable rifle soon.

In this forum, there are two schools of thought. Rifles built with expensive parts and 'cheap' rifles that shoot like expensive rifles. They can all shoot really well with 1/3 to 1/2 MOA the norm.

Competition rifles will of course shoot better.

It's all good. Have a look at the Summerland LR shoot post (competition forum). There you will see a wide variety of top end rigs AND factory rifles. All did very well out beyond 1 mile.

Best money you can spend is on your barrel. Nothing else will matter as much as that pipe for helping you put bullets into the same hole.

I can offer you Shilens. Kreigers are available from Obtunded. Mike Rock and Lilja are available through ATR. Then there are Gaillards, McPhees, McClennans and Smiths.

Without a good barrel, you just got a very expensive noise maker.

Decide on an action yet?

Jerry

PS A factory Savage 10FP in either a HS or McM stock will give you 1/2 MOA, maybe even better. For what they cost, pretty hard to build one for less.

Spin on a match quality barrel and they can run with the best on the market.

Thanks Jerry,
All the bits pictured are for a 700 S/A footprint...I will likely bin most everything as the AICS while not as ###y fits me well and has all the desirable features like magazine and adjustable pull and the cool paint job. As for the actual action, lets just say it comes with a free "Medical Degree". It's under lock and key, I gotta keep it ways from Rooster33...he keeps eyeballing it like she was a waitress at Sammy J Pepper's...

Build exactly like you want it, get to know it initimately (i.e. load development) and keep it and shoot it forever. In the long run it's probably cheaper.

It only gets expensive when you build, sell, build, sell...always searching for the next cool thing.

My damage since getting into LR shooting is as follows:

3 factory rifles

2 full blown customs (one with the most expensive friggin parts you can get)

5 high end scopes (2 leupold, 2 nightforce, and 1 schmidt/bender)

More reloading crap than I can shake a stick at,

AND, my last purchase (yet to be delivered) a tan Accuracy International AW 308 with all the goodies. **(That was cheap)** :)

Buddy, once you drink the Kool Aid, your screwed!!

Roger that...should be a sticky in every forum heading...from guns to scopes to gear...

Precision rifles are just as addictive as drugs. I am not sure but strongly believe gunpowder is a refined byproduct of crack.

And the worst part is that it is not just the rifle that is spendy, there is the scope , then the loading gear, and ofcourse to have only 1 means it is lonely in the safe, so you need to build another 1 to keep it company, and then you realize that there are other calibers that merit use, so in no time you have 3, and everyone knows 3 will never get along, so yet another 1 is required to keep peace and harmony in the safe.
