It was the Mohawks use of the norinco AKs at Oka that was the death knell for ownership of this type of rifle in Canadian citizens hands.
It was not poly technique as mini 14s are still on the "good" list.

Well, I imagine, in that case, it would have been whoever was in power when OIC No. 13 was implemented. The Date attached was January 1, 1995 - So I imagine Jean Chretien or one of his flunkies decided what names went on that list.
 
Having only my own experiance with AKs to go by...I am not sure why -1898 was a troll and banned...I was also under the impression that the 858 was another country's version of the AK. I am NOT a troll but I do disagree with some stuff. BTW, I didn't mean that the Mini-14 should be banned but that incident was the first big crime spree (that I recall) that got the morons all swinging from trees and screaming. I am OK with gun control but armed, law-abiding citizens are the best ones to determine or guide the ways to handle crimial use of guns and restrictions on ownership. A good long brain scan or something to weed out the freaks (present company excluded, of course) would be ok. I just don't trust any politician with my rights on almost any topic.

If you can successfully argue that the CZ 858 is a variant of the AK, then just about any firearm is a variant of an AK. They share no components. They are a magazine fed, semi auto in 7.62 x 39. That is the only thing similar. If the CZ 858 is a variant of the AK, then any magazine fed, semi auto is also a variant.

Lots of VZ58s are in the middle east, so many in fact it's the reason FAB defense in Israel markets forward rails , grips and stocks for this weapon primarily for the private military contractor contingents based there.
They are as close to a kalishmikov as a Canadian can get
I think since they can be stripper clip fed welding a cut down five round mag to the well would be only option in possessing these in the near future.
Then they would be effectively neutered and still be owned and transferred by the general public.
Also no public embarrassment by confiscating all those currently registered.
A firearms verifier could ensure said modification is complete and the rifle could be possessed .
Just an idea
