I've done it....because I loved that dog
"Sir" had cancer, was constantly in pain and had to be put down. Sir also was terrified of the vets. After it was established that he had to go, I asked myself: "If it was me...how would I want to go? Terrified at the vet or would I rather be having a good time then "lights out"?
I owed him too much to have him die in a strange environment scared out his whits...I wouldn't want to go out that way. Spent a couple hours playing and saying goodbye, then threw his favorite ball one more time......
Somtimes you gotta take the hard line for those you love, even though it's tough for you.
He doesn't sound too down about it. Not when he has a good friend like you to come over and do the job for him and the cremation as well. Saves another $100 or so. He's just pocketed $800 and saved money on dog food as well.
He's a winner all round. A real winner.

Don't feel guilty putting down the dog. Vets (and some other professionals...) should be ashamed for charging ridiculous amounts of money and make people feel bad if they hesitate getting the services.
I absolutely LOVE my dogs and understand how frustrating and hard it can be to decide whether or not to put down a loving "family member". My first dog was almost begging me to end his suffering (he was only 8 years old and had brain tumor). Maybe it's not a manly thing to admit but I cried for three days...

Mumptia, you have my sympathies. I shot a springer earlier this year that had a number of health problems for some time(I"m not going into specifics or how much I spent on him as it seems some folks here have the right to pass judgement on other"s decisions).
A sad fact of life is that we will outlive all of our dogs(except maybe our last one!) and that someday we will have to say goodbye.
Hope the replacement is a success and has better luck.

Maybe you should charge him going rate, and he'll look for his dog next time instead of going to bed and hoping for the best...

I found a dog inthe ditch one day, knocked on a few doors, when I found the guy... he said "she got away on me last night, I guess I should have looked for her" He spent a few buck s and the dog is alive albeit a bit messed up.
I even drove the guy to the vet with his dog and ruined my hunting day, I thought for sure the dog was dead!
Alot of dogs get along fine for most of thier life as tripods. Maybe there is some animal lover with deep pockets that wants to take on the responsability of paying for the surgery and caring for the dog.
I've put down dogs and cats and it's ####ty but it really comes down to personal choice. A buddy of mine spent $10 000 on his lab after it lost one of it's legs...I do now and I continue to think that he was crazy. But I guess he had the money to do it.
$200? Sure. $800? I'd have to really love the dog.... $1500? Only if the Girl made me....$2000? *POP* to the head.

This is my view on the situation as well. If I was rolling in dough and $800 was coffee money I might think differently, but probably not. It's obscene what some people spend on their animals when there are so many humans suffering as much or more. Doggy weddings costing $10's of thousands being one extreem example.
There is medical insurance available to pay the high cost of medical care for animals....It is well worth it for those that don't view pets as disposable when the care costs escalate.

I was gonna tell Coltfan to ease up but if Mumptia posted this I'm sure he can deal with wise cracks.
I actually applaud his attitude, most guys would be looking for their neighbors head on a platter even though it wasn't they're fault.

That's right, thats why many people treat pets as disposable items as soon as they start costing money...then look to a public forum for sympathy and reassurance that throwing the animal away is the right thing to do.
Compassion ain't cheap. either is doing the right thing
Applaud his attitude ? leaving the dog out in the temperature he described ?
Wow what a great attitude.....maybe he should have put on a pair of boots and a coat and looked around....a dog in a leg hold trap is sure to make a noise that could have been heard.........at least he could have made an attempt to find it ...

I grew up in a rural area where there aren't alot of people, I couldn't drag my dogs into the house with a cable and a winch, and thats all year long. Never went looking for them cause they always came home when they wanted, they never caused problems with the neighbors or their dogs and they slept outside 24/7. That doesn't make me a bad owner, those dogs were well looked after. If I walked out the door in the middle of the night to have a smoke they were either there or they were out putting coons up a tree, never worried about them though.

Nothing was done until one day he had enough, went into his backyard and shot and killed everyone of his neighbors pigs (on his land) and drug them with a tractor back to his neighbors. If it was me & the dog was part of my family it wouldn't take me long to come up with $800. but then my dog is part of my family. A good dog will give you 800 bucks in love in very short time! I've seen dogs live quite happily with 3, it's not like they have to forage for food or anything!
I'm with Dinsdale, when my 6 yr old beagle got a tumor last summer I'd have given up anything to save her

dude, get a grip, as the son of a vet (and acquaintance of other vets) i can almost guarantee that the vet would arrange a payment plan to cover the cost of amputation.
i worked in my dads clinic or was called in for night emergencies pretty much my whole life numerous times there was a hushed conversation in the back room with my dad and no money changed hands. to this day my dad has NEVER had one of those cases pay him back whether it took a month or 7 years.
pets are a responsibility that require work and attention.
my feeling on reading the OP is:
-where was your fenced yard
-can you prove the dog was caught in a trap or just laying blame soemwhere else
-many many dogs have lived happy productive lives as tripods (i've also seen 2 legged dogs in pretty much any combination including a wheeled carriage for the butt)
-dogs that run "free" in the country get shot and letting them do so is irresponsible
