Putting in an early request for goose hunting... (don't flame! please!)

He doesn't own any land in the Ottawa area, he like myself has established connections with a few landowner. We have sort of become known as the " young lads that hunt here".

Asking this far ahead for geese is not the best use of your time. You need to scout them during the season, just picking a corn field won't cut it.

Darn, wish you knew someone who owned some land there!

So any suggestions? I gather from the above quote that I should watch the geese during the early parts of the season, and see where they're landing, then use that info to try and get access to those patches of land next season (assuming it'll be too late to ask during the season)?

You have to find a field geese are feeding in then find out who owns it and ask for permission. Geese may eat the field out and be gone in a day but most of the time they stick around for a day or two. I have a route set-up where between three guys we can keep an eye on every property we have permission for as well as some we don't, I estimate we put on somewhere around 3000 km's during the goose season just scouting. Good binoculars and a 4x4 can open up alot of oppurtunities other people miss.

Easiest to start at the roost and follow them around since the roost is fairly constant as far as migratory birds go.

Unless someone bust the roost, if the roosts are in a no discharge area it works perfectly, in Ottawa we get folks who jump fences and bust the roosts fairly regularly. It sucks because they can kill a bird or two but we lose out on a weeks hunting, or atleast have to re-locate.

Yes, but from what Alberta friends have told me, the cost of living is higher too!

However, life out west seems more attractive than in this little federal town...

Not sure about OT, though when I was there 2 years ago it sure wasn't any cheaper then here, and BC is a whole lot more expensive!

Calgary is expensive, that is for sure, but the smaller communities in the province are quite reasonable. What is gas at in OT right now? It is 1.12 here in the south, around a 1.08 farther north. No PST/HST. No medical premiums. No carbon tax. Property taxes are up there, yet I hear horror stories from other parts of the country as well.

Guess it is all relative. At least here no one verbally accosts you at the gas station when they see a deer or a couple of geese in the back of your truck.... er Volvo.

hahah The volvo wouldn never see bush. (no dirty pun intended...or was it? :p) I would need a truck for hunting.

Yea, here in Ontario, at least in Ottawa, I wouldn't be surprised if someone would call me a murderer, a travesty to humanity, and so on, because I hurt the defenseless cuddly little deer or "bunny wabbit", if I pulled up with game in a small truck at a gas station.

I hate all that Ontario crap. Carbon tax, HST, yadda yadda....ugh

Gas by the way, is $126.4 (last night). *buys diesel jetta wagon* lol

Want to hire me? 100K a year would be PERFECT!

The thing is I do speak french. I speak English, French, Spanish, Polish. The minor in Spanish was because I was not allowed taking French since I already knew it (I WAS able to, but it would have made my courses very complicated).

Ontario Out of Doors mag huh? I'll give it a go!

Also, Saskatchewan huh? I will have to look into it, although Alberta seems to appeal to me more. Just the whole lack of mountains drives me nuts :D

You need to buy a goose call and learn to speak goose! Canadas dont seem to respond well to Polish!!:stirthepot2:

What you require is a mentor. It's unfortunate that no one stepped up to the plate in the Ottawa area to take you out. I have taken many people out and introducted them to duck hunting and today they are on their own having a great time in the outdoors. All you need is a little help for one season and it will give you alot of confidence in yourself to ask for permission from land owners and as a good hunter. I live in southern Alberta and if you can make it down I "will" take you out on a duck/goose/pheasant/partridge hunt and you can stay at my place for free which includes food and lodging.(only chip in for gas)

Good sir, you are what this world requires as a role model :)

If only I WERE in Southern AB....unfortunately I live in Liberalville, and am far from good times :( (I even have the required guns for watefowling and upland bird hunting...just no one to take me out).

If anyone in the Ottawa area wants to take me, let me know! (Either goose, duck, or grouse etc).

Also, I will have you know that geese DO repsond to Polish.....they turn around and fly away very quickly...if that's not a response, I don't know what is! :D
