Question about Simunition rounds

According to the manufacturer it's not possible for civilians to purchase these rounds. How did you come across them? Also, how are they getting onto ebay in large numbers?

9mm sim

The actual conversion kits for semi handguns are usually just a barrel change.
the conversion barrel lacks the neccedssary features to lock into the slide making the conversion strictly blowback. The cartridge itself has a propellant in it that causes it to telescope(the white ring) and transfer energy to the slide allowing it to function, extract eject feed.
The projectile (small paint capsule) is actually 30 cal not 35 so the conversion barrel also has a 30 cal bore. This design prevents a live cartridge from being chambered in the simunition conversion barrel.

manufacturer has specific recommendations for minimum safe distances and the safety equipment required when product is used for trg.
Yes serious injury can occur from improper use of the product.

Just the technical info for you

Thanks for the info, soa siim round will have a hard time firing through a std 9mm barrel?

If you tried to fire it in a mauser or 30-30 the pellet would likely lodge in the barrel. So a conversion kit for a pistol is about $ 300 USD. The conversion kit is not just a necked down barrel insert but also a lighter spring so the condition blue firearm will cycle. Sim is really proud of their conversion kits:mad: If they offer one for your particular firearm it is an easy conversion and easily converted back. Simunition (the company) is anally restrictive about selling anything to civilians which I don't agree with. The other drawback to sim is it does not effectively mark in glancing hits, it has to hit straight on to pop and mark.

Safeguard Seminars International is offering a sim force-on-force training across Canada starting in March.:dancingbanana: We do not use sim. We are certified scenario instructors for the other guys and we can obtain all the product and equipment we want and bring it to the people. There is nothing illegal about this kind of self defense training it is just frowned upon by some provincial CFO's and left wing lieberal nuts who don't trust the people.

This I don't agree with either because the citizen or victim-to-be is the first responder to any violent confrontation and ought to be able to train for that eventuality. The restrictive ideology of not letting them take training that could save their life is like saying "We have professionally trained Medics in this city so no civilians should be allowed to take First aid courses". OK, I'm done ranting.

I have two of the barrel conversions, one for a Sig P226 and one for a Mas G1 (Beretta copy). I have noticed that the barrels are bored at an angle i.e. they are bored centrally at the action but the bore is higher at the "pointy" end. The only reason I can think for that would be to compensate for the lower muzzle velocity and produce the same aim point at a specified distance.

Yeah, the paint bullet is .30", and the back-end is a 9mm cartridge dimensions... just like a .30 mauser... I'd like to test that to see how far the 'fool-proof' goes. I'd like to see the look on the Geezers faces when THAT comes out the end of my Broomhandle!

I've been to the factory in Quebec that makes these (A part of SNC-Lavalin or IVI for you old die-hards) and they ARE pretty cool. The chambers for the conversion kits have cut-outs, if I recall correctly, so that EVEN if you manage to jam in a real round, the cartridge isn't supported properly and the case ruptures out the side instead of sending the bullet squeezed down the barrel. I got to fire a full-auto MP-5 conversion kit, (albeit only at the wall in the shop/factory) and it was pretty cool. The sales-guy said when he goes to try and sell this to an agency, he puts on a padded suit and dances around on the range and lets the agency reps shoot away at him. Having seen what they do, I'd say that's a tough way to make a living...

Wow fun! It does not really hurt if it is just 9mm. Especially with a suit on.
You are right, about the energy being diverted if a lethal projectile could somehow be jammed into the chamber and fired.

For real training there is nothing better to get you to experience what it is like in the eye of the storm.

380 ACP can chamber and fire in some conversion kits. Simunition is a brand name, the company manufactures non lethal and lethal training ammunition, and it's not always obvious which one you have. The marking cartridges are currently referred to as Non Lethal Training Ammuntion (NLTA), or commonly as FX. The reference to Simuntion refers to an entire line or cartridges, some of which will kill people. It is important to have some knowledge of this product BEFORE YOU SHOOT IT AT ANY PERSON.

Ouch! Good points that were left unmentioned piperdown. So true; sim makes lethal and non lethal ordinance. The 380 will fit in some. The stuff we use is a different company called airmunition out of Switzerland.

We sometimes use simunitions with our 9mm Smith and Wesson.
The only thing we swapped out was the barrel.
It's great for training. Especially with the ability to use the same firearm that you're already used to.

It is great to actually use your own sidearm. It is one thing to read about or hear about what happens in the eye of the storm. Quite another to experience as real as you can with sim training. Also, you learn from you screw ups without getting killed. That can be a real plus.

I recently came across an area scattered with empty marker cases. I guess local ERT was training and hasn't cleaned up yet.

but I found half a box of 9mm FX rounds someone must have drooped :D :D. I was looking forward to shooting them but I guess I can't... too bad.

I was just working with the USCG on OP Frontier Sentnel. THey used the same simunition that your talking about. They had to use a converted pistol and rifle. Doesn't look all that hard to do, but I think it maybe more than just a simple barrel swap. Was working at the time or else I woulda given them a hand doing the conversion and asked more questions.
