 no picture.....

I don't think you'd match an 8 Mag with 8X57 IMP, usually you can get the velocity of the next size case. (ie. 30/06 AI would come close to .308 Norma Mag)

Ok so maybe an 8X57 improved would be like a 8mm-06 ?? Then an 8mm-06 improved would be closer to the 8mm mag but I can see from my Sierra Manual it would not come close. Too bad I thought I could have a gun similar to an 8mm mag (which is somewhat high on the "to get" list) but without the hassel of brass...etc :(

I know, I know just get a .338 Winchester  .....just not the same :)

Jacky,
The 8mm Rem mag is based on the full length 375 H&H case blown out requireing a 0.375-inch longer bolt travel than the standard 30-06. It would be closer to the 338 Win Mag. The 8x57 is closer to the 30-06 class. The 8mm-06 is just a 30-06 case blown out to 8mm cal.. Years ago I shot a 8mm Win Mag and it wasn`t the most pleasant to shoot.
I do shoot the 8mm-06 which I like. I have owned a 338 Mag and liked the 300 Win Mag better. Everyone will have a differant thought as to what to shoot .
I can`t see the pic today either? Could see it last night :(

Yes I knew the 8mm mag was close to the 338 Win and I can see after looking through 3 different manuals to campare the cartridges at hand that the 8X57, even if improved is a good step down from what I am looking for in the 8mm mag.

I have been humming and hawing about the 8mm for a while now and am starting to think that a 375 H&H may be the way to go. However, I still have a taste for the 8mm and these different wildcats do make me think about the possibilites. Thanks.

Off on vacation for the weekend.

hehehe, I know where you are going :p Don`t know bout you but for me it was like pullin teeth

Jacky, go with the 300, or 338 mag, or the 375H&H, the 8mm Mag is just too abusive for what ya get.

RR will explain the Brat,He designed the case and can explain it to you. He and I have the only 2 ever made, based on the 303 brit. It is very close to the 225 Win. I will try and take a pic with a 225 win and 22-250 so you can see the differance.

Hey, I'll jump in here and say I'm a wannabe wildcat shooter - thinking about something like a .280 Ackley Improved or similar for hunting. I'm a bit leery about some of the difficulties of not shooting a factory calibre though - obviously need to get a rifle re-barrelled and get a set of custom dies. Anything I'm missing? I like the versatility of the round compared to a lot of factory loads and the long range ability is a great bonus. Just a question of trade-offs. I’m going to start reloading for my factory calibres this summer, so I’ll be set up that way, add another set of dies and go, right? What is the best way to get the rifle going (For a hunting type rifle)? Do most people buy a stripped action or junker rifle and take it to a gunsmith for a full build up, or buy a factory new rifle of the appropriate action length, throw away the barrel and have a new one put on in the new calibre?

Lots of questions, but inquiring minds want to know!
