1-8" 26" Mcgowan varmint contour 22-243 Middlestead built off a savage 10FP wearing 6.5-20X50 Leupold MK 4 and a B&C vertical grip varminter. Still in the load development stage but according to the chronograph with h1000 it should shoot 80 GR bullets like a 22-250 shoots 50 gr bullets. I am getting near compressed loads with no pressure signs yet so I might have to speed the burn rate up a bit and try some H4831, H4350 or RL 19 for the heavy bullets. I suspect RL 17 should work good for the 65 GR and lighter range if they will stabilize and hold together in a 1-8.

P.S. this is my first wildcat and also my first attempt at load development from scratch so if I am not on the right track or anyone has some pointers for me I am all ears.

I've been shooting a 22-243 Middlestead for about 20 years. Mine has a 1-14 twist, which I won't do when I rebarrel. It still shoots very well though, so that is in the future somewhere. - dan

Beautiful gun! I like the chambering and your choice of components for the build. Aesthetically pleasing as well.

I've only wildcatted a 6.5, 8mm and 45 cal. I have a 243 I have considered rechambering to 6mm-284. Thing is, I never shoot it - maybe some day.

I shoot a 6mm-284 as well Andy, good caliber (built on a Rem 788). With the right bullets it shoots very flat. I went looking for a little more velocity so built a 240 Gibbs (built on a Win 70 with a Ron Smith gain twist barrel). Amazing coyote gun, but the need for speed was itching at me, so I next went with a 6mm Mach IV. Still trying to find a good load for that one, but I think I will need a new barrel before I'm done. It's all fun though. - dan

270-308

I'm working on a browning lever rebarreled to 270-308,having a real hard time working up loads that are accurate, having said that I did take 2 deer this season with it but it has since acted up and needs another trip to my gunsmith as I ended up overloading it a tad and had a primer disintigrate and gum up the works(sure glad I was shooting with safety glasses).I thought I had a good load that I was tweeking by playing with OAL but had my mishap so now I'm kinda sitting on sidelines waiting for a chance to get it repaired and figure my next steps.

I shoot a 22-250 AI, a 375 ICL Kodiak and a 264 Pac-Nor which is a 264 win with a tight neck and short throat. It's fun to play with custom stuff, but that 264 is a PITA to case prep for. I think that my next will be a 243 AI, I've got dies on order and just need a rifle to abuse. I had wanted a 6mm-300WSM with a 44 degree shoulder, but custom reammer, full custom dies and the BS of putting it togather doesn't merit the 200 FPS it would have over a 243 AI. Have a look at the Allen Mag line if you want SERIOUS performance. THose things are nutz.

I know it's a silly question but when you rebarrel to a wildcat and get your certificate updated to the wildcat caliber, are you automaticly flagged as a reloader by the CFO then have more chance to be visited by the natural ressources guys?

Natural resources does not visit anyone. I'm really biting my tounge not to make a stupid comment about your retarded question.......

well, they're so discriminatory... anything is possible. Seeing how careless the RCMP is about giving out improper storage charges to everyone, I'm just trying to get everything on my side to avoid that.

I could also just not re-register the gun but I know I'm supposed to. So just go ahead with your insults it's all good

I am considering a 25/284 built with a model 70 action.....and a barrel of only 21"........

Question: Anyone have any thoughts on this..(short barrel length)...?....Also it seems to consistantly jam the last round out of the magazine........I can't see a solution to this...yet.

Experienced thoughts/opinions needed...and appreciated.
I would like to purchace this unit and eed to make the decision in the next day or two.

Havin' a hard time with this here kumputer thing..........hope this message gets to the right people..........Did I mention that I still have 8-track in my truck?

I am working on a 8mm-303Br. Took a .303AI case, necked it up to 8mm. Made the case, have the 8mm barrel for one of my P-14s, just waiting for the capability to make a reamer or to get one made. Then it'll be time to play. My first wildcat was based on the 7.62x39mm and wasn't really a wildcat at all, just a wildcat load.
