Reasons for owning a dangerous game rifle in North America

i really like playing around with 43 mauser and i started playing around with stronger actions then the 71/84, so i wanted to run the pressures up a bit but didnt want to ruin my 43 mauser brass (costs the same as 460 weatherby) so after doing a little measuring and looking at random ammo i had i figured the 375HH case family would be perfect, i expanded the neck to .446, ran them through the 43 mauser dies and then trimmed to 62mm long, load them with about 56gr H4895

here is a thread on it

Don't swim too far from shore, it is my understanding that the barrel steel was the weak point, not the Mauser 71 action (it has the 3 rings of steel after all), supposedly the early work with the 8x57 was done with the Mauser 71. And tens of thousands of the similar Gras 1874 were rebarreled to 8x50R Lebel during WWI.

Yeah im keeping pressures pretty low, aiming for around 30-32k psi. When i get my reamer made ill order a new manufacture barrel for it and bump it up a bit. But lets not take this thread too far off the rails.

Nice brybenn, the Baikal actually surprised me with its value. It’s a solid feeling gun that handles better than I expected. Nice seeing one working.

Cant afford a nice holland n holland. At least with the baikal if i dont stop the bear with both barrels im not afraid to resort to clubbing it to death. Its been flawless. Still has heavy triggers but its the same frame as my baikal ij58 sxs 12ga. I have over 65000 rnds thru that gun so the 4570 version just points to where ever i look. The bear laid out beside it was shot at 12' while it was running at me thru some new growth birch. Shot as soon as i saw black part the branches. It carries well and prints accurately. Ive only managed to rub some bluing off the barrels where i carry it over my shoulder on long treks. Wish we could have gotten the 9.3x74r version here

My baikal loaded with 405 gr bullets at 1600 and 1650 fps is like shooting a lightweight 410 with 3" shells. Not bad at all and comes right back down nicely. Not much muzzle rise

I have shot my 375 H&H on marmott at the farm, when i hitted them they vaporized and when i missed i was doing a big hole in the field.

Very powerfull caliber.

Cant wait to try my DA 50BMG.

the baikal 9.3x74r is ou not sxs and still trying to find some in europe that i can import here so far not that much luck.

I have not read the previous 173 posts, but one can own one of those dangerous games rifles is "Because I can".
Works for me... and as long as it is in the venerable 375 H&H there is no need for a lesser Queen posing to be a King .
The .375 Holland & Holland Magnum is a medium-bore rifle cartridge introduced in 1912 by London based gun-maker Holland & Holland and thats 108 year of proof .

The best reason for getting a .375 is that it is very likely to Shanghai you and drag you off to Africa. If yours exhibits this type of behavior; resistance is futile.

Another reason is more practical. If you don’t have a .375 what exactly are you supposed to do if someone asks to see your .375? Oh sure, you can pretend you’re choking and run out of the room, but that only works once. After that you’ll just be standing there looking like you got caught trying to run a dog and pony show with no pony. It’s even worse if you’re married. Just imagine how embarrassed your wife would be if the truth came out. People would treat her with pity; perhaps to the point of giving her savages, bushnells , used articles of clothing and. small cash donations while uttering things like “ Oh honey, I had no idea that things were so bad, you should have called”. You can’t just think about yourself all the time. ;)

Ha! I read that to my wife. She laughed out loud. Because my .375 did lead me to Africa. But the really funny thing? I didn't bring it. I used my .375 H&H near home to shoot a couple elk, and a moose, and a bear, then my eye wandered to other .375's, and I had to try them. And also had to have a classic 9.3x62, and a 9.3x74R double rifle, and then a real dangerous game double rifle in .450-400 3" Nitro Express. And so when I went to Namibia last October I shot my game with a 9.3x62 and the .450-400, so now I have to go back to Africa in order to use the .375 as is only proper... it's a disease. Glad I'm not cured.

Reminds me of when I was once asked how I justified a Corvette.

"Because I wanted it." That is all the justification required.

I had a 375 H&H double. Nice caliber.

Sounds like some of the ;) "rationale" I use. I have two basic paths I use. #1, for some predetermined "just cause" or, failing that, "just cuz":p.
