Reccomended High veloicity air rifle?

I picked up a Benjamin Sheridan nitro-trail 1100. Quiet, punches through 3/4" plywood like it isn't there, and comes with a decent optic. It's 22 caliber and I wouldn't hesitate to pop a gopher with it...

If you look at British airgun magazines, you'll see that they do a lot of rabbit hunting out to 50 yards with accurate rifles and going for head shots with guns shooting just under 800fps. Precise shot placement is the key. As others have said above, velocity over 900 with pellets gives poor accuracy.

Since you are already were looking at the HWs and Dianas, then don't bother with any of the less expensive brands. The important parts like triggers are already good on the German guns, the TX200 is good also and an investment at this level will ensure that most of the trials of shooting springers will go smoother with more satisfaction. If you don't need open sites then the HW97, TX200, HW98, Diana350 are good, if you want open sites then the HW80, HW77, Diana RWS48-52 are well regarded. If you want the most powerful and accurate then you need to go PCP without a doubt.

Y2K,
What type of shooting are you planning on doing? plinking/ home range plinking, competition target shooting, small game hunting, large game hunting (yes - they have .50 and higher calibre airguns!). What is your propulsion of choice - spring, precharged pneumatic, multi-pump pneumatic, single stroke pneumatic, CO2, gas piston? Are you wanting an airgun that is PAL exempt, or something over 500 ft/sec? There are alot of fine air rifles out there depending on what you are looking for and price range ($30-5,000). My suggestion is to check out http://www.pyramydair.com. That website will help you figure out what is out there in the market of airguns. They also ship to Canada.

Also, for those interested, there is a tv show called American Airgunner. It's the only airgun show, that I know of. Watch episodes here: https://www.youtube.com/user/AmericanAirgunner

I've agree with the HW suggestions, Ive got an HW77 with peep sights that has been tuned and it is a very smooth shooting spring gun. I also recently tried an Air Arms(Air Arms T200) made by CZ precharged gun that was very nice and would be my choice if going for a precharged gun! It's a compact and light weight gun that can be run with peeps or scope and you can add a 10 shot magazine system.

I just picked up an FX rifle (made in Sweden) with a Hawke 4.5-14x42 Sidewinder scope... I've only plinked with it thus far, but will be putting it through the paces when I get a chance. Their build quality is excellent. 12 round magazines, adjustable match trigger, comes in .177, .22 and .25. I got the .22 since ammo is plentiful. Unfortunately the factory shrouded barrel that makes it nearly silent is illegal in Canada... but I'm pleased with the non-shrouded noise level.

Youtube has many videos showing the extreme accuracy of the FX.

I`d be using for informal target shooting and the odd bird (magpie)around yard.

Sounds good.
What's your budget?
Do you want quality?
A nice German springer in .177, take your pick they are all pretty good, will do just fine if you enjoy nice guns and have $500-$600 (new) to spend.

We've had a RWS Diana 52 (177), for a long time. Over a crono with standard lead pellets around 1200 fps. Side lever and very well built and accurate. However they are getting quite pricey these days. Also, it is a spring gun, and beats up scopes pretty good. However unlike a PCP, no air tanks or pumps needed.

Penetration of a standard pellet is just shy of two 3/4" thick spruce boards (1x4 construction grade)

With air rifles it is best that they shoot under 1000 fps and here is why:

Pellets destabilize at velocities close to and above the speed of sound. This is due to the shape of the pellet and the light weight.
The destabilization causes severe loss of accuracy and loss of down range energy.
For this reason it is best if an airgun shoots in the 800-900 fps range. This is where pellets tend to be the most accurate.

I own a Benjamin Discovery slightly modded and if I do my part it will shoot sub MOA at 100 yrds consistently. ( .177 @ 860 fps with 10.3gr JSB exacts)

The extremely high velocity's claimed by some airgun companies are achieved with alloy pellets which are fast but have terrible accuracy.

A gun marketed at 1500 fps would likely shoot between 1000 and 1200 fps with decent lead pellets.

PCP guns are boringly accurate with good pellets while spring and gas piston guns require a certain technique to shoot accurately.

PCP guns can be very expensive to get into but a good springer in the right hands would hold its own against PCP's

For a nice springer I would suggest this gun: http://www.dlairgun.com/Air-Rifles/Weihrauch/045_HW_97_K.html

My .02

Good choice. I have the blue laminate model 97KL in .177...

I get 830fps from a 20.5gn .22 pellet (30ftlb) and can adjust it down to 12ftlb.

30ftlb gives about 50 shots and 12ftlb gives around 400 shots on a full bottle.

Only downside its bloody expensive.

Benjamin makes one with a pressure gauge, you pump it up with a foot pump. Solid full size wood stock.

If anyone else knows more about this model please pipe in, I'm interested as well.

The Banjamin Discovery. Available in 177 and 22. Nice little carbine but I wouldn't take it over 2000psi. It's a good entry level model because it comes with the pump which normally is a big buck item. D&L Airgun has them with pump for about $525. I bought one used for about $450 with a scope mounted from a Gunsmith who likes air rifles. He moved the barrel band out towards the end of the muzzle and said he used to get 3/8" groups @ 25 yards with it like that. I've never really shot it much to be honest.
