Recommendation for my first 270 rifle? Price range $1000

They retained a couple of features of the Sako but not many. Other then the flat bottom integral recoil lug receiver, pretty much everything else has been modified.

Yeah your right, I should have said *based* on an old Sako action...
But it is why its so good, it got the Sako DNA ;)

The receivers are close enough that you can bed a Vanguard in a SAKO stock with no trouble at all.

As well, I have owned a fair number of both makes, still do, and without any reservation whatsoever will state that the factory Vanguards are more accurate than the SAKOs.

My only concern with considering a Steyr would be parts. Are they common here in Alberta? Do most scopes fit them?

Personally i wouldn't want a 26" barrel on my primary deer rifle either. That sort of length should be reserved for target guns or magnum cases IMO. The price is nice though...

I've shot a .308, 30-06, 30-30 and several others as I have a few friends that are avid hunters and all have their preferences in calibers as any person does.
I enjoyed the 308 the most out of them all. So the recoil isn't of concern as far as that part goes for a 270.

If recoil might be a problem, why not buy a 243 for now and a 30-06 for later?

"Recoil isn't a problem"

"If recoil is a problem...."

lol

It must be a typo - it is supposed to be 23.6". Still shorter than my 7mm MAG and easy to handle in the bush.

Well since nobody has addressed the elephant in the room....

That has to be the ugliest gun ever put into production... looks like an Axis mated with a Manatee.
Seriously. Fuuugly as Fuggg. The butt looks like a thalidomide flipper baby limb.

I looked at a couple of T3X Hunters at Hnatiuk's in NS today, they had a 270 and a 7-08 for $1069 each. Nice rifles at what I thought was a decent price for new. With tax and shipping it's over the budget, unfortunately.

Is this where you bring up a Rem 783? Everyone has their opinion. The rear pad is designed to make the LOP easily adjustable. The hammer forged barrel looks amazing. The comb drop is perfect on the stock and the wheel safety is great - even with gloves.

Now that you mention it.... it does have some 783 looks to it, especially the receiver lol.
I have 2 guns with that unfinished hammer forging spiral... it's a cost saving measure, nothing more. Ruger Target 10/22 barrel is like that, same as the cough cough Norinco NS522.
Normally the barrels are turned down to profile after the hammer forging process, not left like that. It's really a very very cheaply manufactured rifle when you get down to the meat and potatoes.

Why not the 270? One would be hard pressed to find a better deer rifle as was the stated intended purpose by the OP.

I was going to say the same thing. Plus, he sounds like a new shooter and there is no mileage in pushing a newer shooter toward something like a 300WM. I see it as akin to the 243...it will do the job but not everyone can make it do the job well.

They're a strange bit of kit...well thought out, accurate and well made. Yet they do absolutely nothing for me. Slightly funky lines maybe? All that plastic? I just don't know. Shot one once and it performed well but I could never bring myself to buy one, even for a deal. Just not my speed I guess.
