Recommendations for a Lady?

A saw will fix the too long stock issue. When .y son was younger I just bought a beater buttstock and had if cut to fit him.

Honestly, I prefer the look and feel of wood. I have no issue with an older shotgun, either. As long as it works, the age just adds to the appeal in my opinion.

And - as has been pointed out (thank you!) - a wood stock can be cut down.

It was not my intention to offend you however, since your new here I think it only fair to point out that on forums such as this one, not everyone will agree with your statements and really don't care if you get offended.

If your going to shoot in competition then going to the pattern board will be beneficial but in this case the shooter is new and won't be in competition (at least not seriously) for some time, she still has to learn the basics yet. Don't like my opinion..... oh well!

I think the pattern board is part of the basics for a new shooter. Certainly they shouldn't get bogged down with technicalities but if you don't know where your gun is shooting, how can you hit anything? Nothing is more demoralizing for a new shooter than constantly missing targets. Unless they hit a few they won't be shooters very long.

I understand what your saying and I agree, but in this case the shooter doesn't even know what she will be shooting! Why try to pattern a borrowed gun that you may only shoot once to see if you like it? If she finds a gun that she really likes and shows some potential of shooting it well or is thinking of buying it or one like it then it's a good idea but I still wouldn't recommend patterning it before shooting a round with it. Some new shooters shoot very differently from pattern board to target and to shoot patterns properly requires some instruction as well.

My gf was new to trapshooting last year, well almost any shooting to be honest until she met me, lol. She tried out trap last year and really, really liked it. Says its the most fun hobby she has ever enjoyed. She is only interested in the casual shooting at the club and not registered shooting so after trying many guns out of friends and a few lady shooters at shoots I attended we found her a nice NIB Beretta A400Xplor in 20ga that a fellow had bought and never fired. I saved about $800 over retail. The instant she picked it up looking at it she said now this feels good to me. She had zero experience as well at gun fit, feel and all manner of shotguns but something about it felt right to her so I bought it. After a few quick measurements we ended up shortening the stock 3/4". We then went to the pattern board to check poa vs poi and after a few rounds and shim changes had it hitting where she "seemed" to be looking. Out to the club and she was off like a race car hammering rounds at the clays. I could tell from her breaks she was hitting high when she connected so we dropped in a shim to lower the poi to the next one down and wha-la!!!! She was centre punching with authority. She was very consistent....she either missed cleanly or completely inkspotted the targets shooting a mod choke and using Rem Gun Club 7/8oz 7.5's. It still amazes me how the 20 smashes clays on trap!! She loves the light weight of the gun and the soft recoil. We shoot two nights a week and she usually shoots 2 rounds(50 targets) each night though occasionally kicks it up to 3 rounds (75 targets). If I can offer any advice after being a trapshooter of almost 40 years I would say gun fit is of utmost importance followed by recoil management. The softer the better. It's not enjoyable if you're getting bumped around. You may not think you are but in time your body and mind will tell you if you are!! I think the best shotgun for a woman, or anyone gor that matter who is just out for a fun pastime is a gas operated autoloader just to help tame that recoil.

That is a very nice shotgun :D

I'm getting closer to getting my own shotgun. :D Plus, a friend I know is going to let me know the next time she goes to the range - I'm hopeful I'll have it by then. She said she has a Mossberg (I didn't tell her I think they're ugly). What's funny is we know each other outside of trap, I had no idea she even shot!

I believe my teacher-friend is planning on having me do a pattern board. I went into my first day of shooting figuring if I hit even one that I would call it a victory :) I'm a beginner, I'm allowed to fail. As long as I improve I'll be happy.
I can't beat myself up and expect perfection.

My husband is using his grandfather's gun (his dad is loaning it to him). It's a Winchester I think. I reach a little, it feels large to me. Everyone at both the ranges has been super sweet and helpful.

I only hit 10% of the shots the first time I went out (I figured even one would be great, on my first day). Last time out I'm hitting about 40%. I'm hopefully breaking the "aiming" habit. Right now I'll be happy if we can get out a couple times a month, life is pretty busy still.

I’m not a trap shooter, although I have shot a round with an 18 inch barreled single shot field gun (the only one I had) using number two shot (only shells I had).

Yes, the trapshooters were scandalized.

My point?

I had a great time, hit more than I expected.

Some great advice above, especially about using as much of your budget as possible for ammunition.

No matter what the gun, initially, your performance is what counts.

When you can shoot up to the gun you have, it is time to find one that will take you further.

Enjoy the adventure!

Lady Teh Ma, your positive attitude will carry you a long way. Shoot, enjoy, you will improve and you will make some new friends. As already mentioned by numerous responders, shoot what works for you and doesn't beat you up. As your experience and skill advances you will gain the knowledge you are looking for to help you pick your 'perfect gun'. This may take several years but more shooting and trying different guns occasionally will shorten the curve. Breaking things and making noise can be loads of fun!

And.....as you gain more experience, be confident in your own choices.
Sometimes people persist in in giving unasked advice, when it is no longer helpful.
It is OK to ask them to kindly back off.
Have fun busting clays.

Hello Lady tehMa!

Glad to hear you're enjoying trap shooting! It's a lovely past time. I read you're in the Okanagan. If you have any interest, you may already know that there will be a competition this coming weekend at COSSC near Big White. It's open to the public, and its fun to even watch. Reading what you've posted, at the opening of this thread, you've been shooting your instructor's daughter's gun. Possibly Chris (Leslie's gun), a Miroku? If this was the gun you were using, if I'm connecting my dots as I like to think I can lol... How did the gun feel for you? I used to not understand the fitting process or what's comfortable at all... After shouldering quite a few shot guns I realized what I liked, and what felt off to me. I think you just know when you pick it up. If Chris has been helping you, congratulations, he's extremely diligent and helpful. I'm so grateful to the assistance he's provided me, as well as the knowledge he holds and shares.

Now back to the Miroku, I've used it a couple times. First time, not bad... Second time, after using my own gun quite a bit, completely threw my game off. Nice gun, nice recoil system- just doesn't fit me. But know I know after all the guns I've held since. It's a total Cinderella slipper thing. When you know, you know! Happy shopping! Post what you end up finding! And make sure you get your COSSC membership and check out the competition this weekend ;)

:D

While it has been great chatting with the guys I can't tell you how tickled I am to hear from another woman, Tatiana! Tanya? Yes, Chris Rogers' daughter's gun. A Miroku . . . I didn't remember that. The gun doesn't fit me perfectly but I've been able to shoot better than with the others I have tried.

Husband and I are planning on grabbing our membership this weekend. I understand the event this weekend is skeet?

I'm picking up a shotgun today, it will either be mine or my husbands . . . I'm hoping mine :)

So glad to see another woman enjoying trap shooting! Chris also got me involved. And now I’m obsessed :) but I’m not surprised as I’ve always loved shooting sports, with IPSC and 3gun being my first loves lol!

And you’re right, the event is skeet! For some reason in my mind I was thinking trap, but that’s not until mid June.

Oh I’m excited to see what you end up with! There’s no purchase quite like a gun purchase! Glad that you and your husband are both involved and getting memberships! I’m sure we will meet soon :)

Keep us updated on what you end up purchasing!

I'm thinking we will be up there this weekend, we want to get our memberships. I am home now, and the proud owner of a Browning Silver Sporting. It fits, without adjusting! Chris actually drove me down to inspect and buy - he's really impressed with it. And it is so light! Simply beautiful. And the seller was from these forums and was super - lots of info, very friendly and fine with a FTF. I'm so glad my local forum folk gave me the head's up about this place :)

We will have to meet up, I'd love to see your gun and get some tips.
