Recommendations for purcahse...rimfire vets advice pls.

I wasn't vey interested about .22's, until i used my friends Ruger 10/22 semi-auto rifle and now i am hooked. Well i rounded my choices down to 3 options:
1- Remington 597
2-Marlin 795
3-Ruger 10/22

Does anyone have any experience with the first 2? esp the Remington 597? I keep on hearing that they have constant problems with feeding and ejection. But most of the forums i have visited have posts that are in the late 1990's to early 2000 year. I was just wondering if anyone has purchased a recent model 597 manufactured in 2004 or 2005? Just wondering if they worked out all the kink in that rifle, as i am very interested in all the features esp. the "lock back feature" that the Ruger doesn't. I know the Ruger is the premiere rifle to get but i want to get a diff. rifle from my friends who i go shooting with on a constant basis, but i don't mind geting the same one if there are more cons then pros. Thanks a future .22 owner.
 
There's an 'I hate the 10/22" thread around here somewhere...

Still, if I wanted a semi .22 I'd probably go 10/22K (Target/Laminated)

Well these are the only 3 semi-autos that i know of that have a fairly known reputation. I am seriously very new to the rifle scene let alone the rimfire rifle scene. Is there any other recommendations, you suggest? Also i was thinking of the Marlin 7000 but i wanted to have the option of having stock sights if i decided i didnt want to scope my rifle for whatever reason.
 
I have had my 597 for 2 years now and I love it. It is accurate, reliable and I love the bolt hold open feature on the mags. I feed it the cheap federal bulk packs and have had 3 FTE in the last few thousand rounds. I have shot a few 10/22's and still prefer my 597... but those Krinker kits have me intrigued so I might end up with a 10/22 one day to round out the whole collection. What I was is someone to make some 25 round or 50 round drums for the 597.

From your three options, I would choose only four:
1. 10/22
2. 10-22
3. 10 twentytwo
4. ten 22
If I was you, I would buy all four and keep them in different configurations, only to confuse your friends.
Regarding the other question, I'm sorry, I didn't shoot a 597 :eek: recently, and I don't intend to. It would be like cheating on my 10/22's.
 
I had the same dilema.
The Marlin 7000, the Remington or the more expensive 10/22T
I bought the 10/22.

The reasons?
1) I held a Marlin and it felt like a cheap toy
2) the magazine on the 10/22 it's a class act and really shows the quality over the other two.
3)The Remington I've heard some negative feedback on. Again it came down to the class factor. The slickness of the 10/22 mag, and the overall design won me over.

The bad things about the 10/22. Needs an extended mag release, a last shot bolt hold open, and some trigger work before it's really good. I can live without the extended mag release and the bolt open. However it is annoying especially when everything esle is so right.
 
A Marlin 7000 is a far better rifle then a 10/22 IMHO.
One buys a 10/22 because they want to spend more money on it.:p :D

An even better choice IMHO is an Old Mossberg.
Also check out a Browning Buck Mark Target .22
 
Even in stock form, I would take another 10/22 but the best feature of the 10/22 is that if you do not like any part of it, there are 18,462 was to change/improve that particular part and tailor-fit it to your wants :D That is not to say that you will NEED to change all these parts but the option will always be there.
 
After reading everyones post ...wow... i have to say that i am more and more deterred of the choice of buying a 597. I luv the looks and specs of the rifle but when i went to a forum , which was referred to me by a fellow CGN'er( rimfirecentral.com) and in their Remington section there is a Sticky section addressing chronice malfuntions and remedies , it really helped me take that option out of contention. I am def. not knocking any 597 owners, but it seems like regardless of the manufacture year there is consistant problems with this rifle and you have to be careful of what you feed the 597 b/c it will cause misfeeds or other complications.
I still have in mind the choice of a Marlin 795 and the EVER so popular 10/22. But i know i def. want a stainless steel barrel with synthetic stock.1 more week and a get my bonus cheque at that time i will make my final decision and post the pics after my purchase. Any other comments or suggestions before that time would be appreciated. :D

But that's because I wanted an accurate .22 rifle out of the box without having to spend more money on it. The Marlin 7000 fitted that description. And I paid 229.99$ for a very accurate and fine .22 rifle.
 
Before you buy anything...look at the Browning Buckmark.
Best gun I've EVER owned (and the coolest looking), and I've had 11 (yes 11) 10/22's.
Cool factor is off the scale, esp. the mag in the handgrip and the blow-back slide, it's based on a buckmark pistol (reliable), and did I mention the cool factor?

Sorry guys, but the 10/22 has become the Honda Civic of the gun world.
Buy the basic product, spend gobs of cash to get it decent, then realize for what you spent you could have gotten something better and still had enough let over for more toys! Besides...everybody's got one. When I pull one of my BM's out aat the range, people walk right by the blinged out 10/22's (yawn) to ooooh and ahhh at my bone stock gun.

Go to browning.com, and look up the buckmark rifle....you'll be glad you did.

I'm sorry but I disagree with your assessment of the browning buckmark...

10 shot clips for a semi? Yawn....

Also I just think they are a pistol with a ridiculously long barrel, and a stock strangely tacked on.


My main selling feature on the 10/22 was the high cap mags...

Something about ripping through my 50 round drum thats very satisfying.

I've owned many .22s and I never liked an automatic as much as I like my Ruger.
It never jams, its accurate, light, and I've modded mine enough that it doesn't look like every other gun out there...millions of 10/22 owners can't be wrong...
