Hi guys,

Looking at getting my first handgun (9mm) potentially for competing in IPSC. I've fired both the Glock 17 and the M&P 9 and the M&P definitely felt better. I've also heard good things about the glock 34, Sig P226, CZ 75 and the M&P 9 Pro. Any recommendations based on personal experience with any of these? I do prefer a longer barrel which the glock 34 and m&p pro have (5 inches)

Thanks

AK

CZ 75 Shadow would get my vote and is popular with a lot of IPSC folks

Ditto what he said, Sp01 Shadow
Have a look on the EE, have seen several for sale, the weight of an all steel gun, accuracy, minimal muzzle flip, unless you're spending thousands on a Race gun the Sp01 Shadow is #1

since it's for IPSC, 90% of the people will pick cz75 sp-01, I heard some would use p226 as well. others are rare.

Keep trying a bunch of handguns and compete with the one you shoot best. Just because everyone thinks the Shadow should be the unquestioned choice doesn't mean you'll shoot it well. I've had two Shadows and sold them both because my small hands don't like the initial DA pull. Is the Shadow a great handgun, yes, but it's not automatically for everyone just because people on the interweb say so.

4nt - Out of curiosity, what do you shoot now? I ask because I just moved from a Glock to a CZ Shadow because I felt that with thin Al grips, the CZ would fit my small hands better. Also the mag release is easier to operate for me, versus that on the Glock (at least in Production configuration).

I'm a new pistol shooter and have both the P226 enhanced elite and recently picked up the CZ SP-01 Shadow. out of the box, I found myself more accurate with the CZ that the p226. Either my body mechanics favours the CZ or the CZ inherently overcomes my technical deficiencies. I found the stock CZ shadow trigger to be smoother and lighter than my P226 with the SRT. I am planning to do my blackbadge this summer and compete in the fall. I will be using my Shadow for competition. However if I had to carry one into combat I'd choose the P226. different tools for different jobs.

The CZ is so dominant here, based on the law of averages, i would think that it would be the obvious choice.

I shoot Gen4 Glocks and a Walther PPQ. The overall profile wasn't an issue for me but the reach to the DA trigger position and pull weight made for a very inconsistent/uncomfortable first shot (Obviously after that it was a dream to shoot). My brother was more than happy to buy the last one from me. He has a similar hand size but it doesn't seem to bother him one bit.

It all comes down to what you shoot best and for me that's a Glock.

As stated above, it has to fit your hand and give you confidence when you shoot it.

Girsan 92FS 9mm (Beretta 92 clone). Fairly good ergonomics, fast and accurate, but from what I noticed, POI changes more on this gun with different ammo. A model with a barrel bushing may give you ultimate longer range accuracy, but for most IPSC shooting this gun works well. Also, the decocker can be caught when racking the slide in the heat of the game - pull and no bang. Grit tape is a must to ensure consistent grip position. No trigger mod is required, but a spring change (D or C) does make it pull very nicely. I have the 13# C in mine. Reasonable first DA pull even for smaller hands. Splits are very easy and accurate.

S&W M&P Pro 9mm (various versions). The new ones have a better trigger. To make it sweet all that is needed is to round the firing pin block where the trigger bar meets it. This is the best gun for smaller hands or fingers, and with the larger grip is good for medium to larger hands as well. Of course, this is due to the striker-fire and same trigger position for all shots. It is the lightest gun of the bunch, but I don't feel it has any more felt recoil than a CZ Shadow SP-01. The accuracy of my Pro CORE is very good and does not show much change with different ammunition. Fast splits are reasonable. The large front blade sight helps with target acquisition. I didn't like any of the 3 grips that came with it and I did put on a Hogue rubber grip. However, I found the finger groves did not fit my hand, so I went back to the standard Small grip with lots of grip tape on the forward side. The tape made a world of difference on how the gun feels.

CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow (2014). I tried it and just had to buy one! It is one of the heaviest, and mine does shoot very accurately as well. I really like the safety position and it fits my medium - small hands very well with stock grips. No grip tape needed. Some people said the standard grip was too big, but I did not find that. I also have the thin Piranha grip, but found the regular one feels better for me. The DA trigger position is a long reach, but the SA position is very well positioned. I have no trigger job, nor softer springs and do not intend on doing it as the trigger is too easy to fire. The only thing it needs is a lighter recoil spring for better timing on splits. The front red optic sight is superb for target acquisition.

Any of the above would make an excellent first choice for an IPSC production gun. I own all of them, but if i only has to buy one, my vote goes to the Shadow.

I just did my Black Badge with a P226 and it worked well. Most people on the course had Glocks. I think whether you are accurate with and enjoy shooting is the way to go.

Thanks for the recommendations. wasnt expecting this much support for the cz 75. Thought it be more for Glocks. I'll try and see if I can find a fellow member at the range and try their CZ.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ what he said all the way!

Here's what I shoot.

And for a friendlier budget the STI Trojan!
Or entry level budget, the non-STI , STI branded Spartan 5!

Anyways you'd have a smooth shooting gun. In classic there is little parts rules compared to production.
In production theres always this and that to watch out when modding a gun, in classic its way broader.
Or right out of the box im pretty sure youll find them with a much nicer trigger than many production guns.

Might as well post my setup : STI Trojan .40 (I tried it in 9mm and it doesn't recoil AT ALL next to a glock/M&P)

I'm a big fan of Sigs. Well made, excellent long running reliability, and accuracy. No doubt cz is popular in production, bearing in mind a base cz is much cheaper bargain than Sigs. One thing worth mentioning is the cz's are all steel, where a Sig comes mostly stainless slide and aluminum frame. I believe it is that weight differential that makes most shoot well with the cz line. There is a solution if you want to go Sig, stainless. Frame and slide are now all steel, and, what a look. Buy once, cry once, they're not cheap.

Very nice. Not to hijack thread, I'm getting a Trojan in .40 as well. Any problems to be aware of? What mags do you recommend?

Thanks,
