Recommended non standard hunting cartridge??

How about a small twist on a 1000 times asked question....

What would you suggest for a capable all round hunting rifle that is not a standard configuration? Black bear, deer, moose. No big bears or anything like that. Not looking for 30-06 etc etc etc. Something that people you hunt with might ask, "What's that?"



Assume for the purpose of your pick:
Handloading not an issue
Not excessive recoil (subjective I know but something not outlandish)
Not requiring special order/make dies
Not requiring extensive brass forming from a parent cartridge other than necking up/down for example
Sane hunting distances. My area would be 300ish max. Not looking to get a deer at 1000 yards.

A few ways you could go- New, like 28 Nosler or 338 RCM etc

Ticks all those boxes.....not at all common. Pretty much a equivalent of a 7-08. Brass and dies not impossible to find. Vanilla ammo available at larger LGS's. Not going to be a issue for recoil.

270 weatherby magnum, or the one that never caught on for whatever reason is the 325 wsm, you should be able to make them from regular 300 wsm brass.

280 Remington, just a plump 270. Dies ,brass and bullets not too hard to get and not too hard on the shoulder.

I would second the 300 H&H as it is definitely a classic if you can find one...

It is known to group well, reloads easily and can use 375 H&H or 300 Weatherby (you might want to anneal the neck, though for the latter) brass to make your reloads.

It handles 180, 200 or 220 grs bullets for the various critters that you might want to hunt with applomb...

How about an 8x57 ? I had one years ago, it's not a standard here in North America but still reasonably common components. It really is a fine cartridge especially with 200 gr or heavier bullets
