Recommended non standard hunting cartridge??

358 Winchester,...

brass easily necked up from 308 brass,...
decent selection of 35 cal bullets,...
dies are not too hard to find,...
recoil is about the same as a 308 or 30.06,...
accurate,...
point blank range is around 230 yards,...and still deadly at 300 yards,...
will cleanly kill all North American game,...a real thumper on Whitetails and Black bears,...
you can still buy a brand new 358win in a BLR Browning,...

Also, the 284 Winchester would be a great choice as well

/\ agree with this. My hunting buddies looked at me like I had two heads when I bought my blr so chambered

Wow.... was not expecting so many different replies! That's great! I have to be honest that I had to look some of them up. I must admit that the 28 Nosler has captured my curiosity. I have had a 284 along the way and a 280AI as well. I quite like the 7mm but perhaps it's time to move to a different caliber. Will do more reading up on the 358Win as well.

Thanks to all! very much appreciated.

350 Remington Magnum..........not hard on the shoulder, standard dies, good bullet selection, can make brass from any belted mag with a split neck and it is still available, can make plinker loads using 357 pistol bullets. It's about as obscure, yet mainstream as it gets and there are still plenty of rifles out there for sale, I see 1/2 doz a year on the EE. Usually found in a compact nice little package that "carries softly but hits like a big stick". This is one of the most fun yet effective cartridges I have played with and I have owned several over the years and 2 right now.

This is my 350 RM in my Reminton Model 7 MS

I'll agree with previous vote for .280rem... Great cartridge but definitely NOT mainstream. Never see it on shelves. Low recoil great hunting round.

A nice, well mannered, accurate cartridge, that is available with a broad range of bullet weights, that can be used effectively against any game, across any reasonable range that's within the rifleman's ability, is the .375 Ultra.
