Recommended non standard hunting cartridge??

The 40-70 Straight. Brass, dies are easily available and it is easily good to 200 yards, 300 if you have a range finder and know your ballistics.

358 Winchester,...

brass easily necked up from 308 brass,...
decent selection of 35 cal bullets,...
dies are not too hard to find,...
recoil is about the same as a 308 or 30.06,...
accurate,...
point blank range is around 230 yards,...and still deadly at 300 yards,...
will cleanly kill all North American game,...a real thumper on Whitetails and Black bears,...
you can still buy a brand new 358win in a BLR Browning,...

Also, the 284 Winchester would be a great choice as well

How about a small twist on a 1000 times asked question....

What would you suggest for a capable all round hunting rifle that is not a standard configuration? Black bear, deer, moose. No big bears or anything like that. Not looking for 30-06 etc etc etc. Something that people you hunt with might ask, "What's that?"

Assume for the purpose of your pick:
Handloading not an issue
Not excessive recoil (subjective I know but something not outlandish)
Not requiring special order/make dies
Not requiring extensive brass forming from a parent cartridge other than necking up/down for example
Sane hunting distances. My area would be 300ish max. Not looking to get a deer at 1000 yards.
450 Bushmaster like this, no need to reload either as factory ammo is available

50 beowulf or 30 Remington AR in the same NR rifle would also be good options

7x57 Ackley! 280 performance in a really efficient package!

This is a 7x57 next to a 7/57 AI case. I took a bull elk with it so it has the stones for the job and super polite recoil because of the lower powder charge.

X2 or 3 for the 7x57 Mauser, I had the good fortune of acquiring an unissued Pre WW2 1935 Brazilian Mauser chambered in 7x57 and it is a beautiful rifle and sweet shooter, super accurate with just iron sights. Interesting thing and I don't know if it is just 7x57 but it will punch a hole in paper that is perfectly round, as if you had a paper punch, cleanest holes I have ever seen.

My buddy has the only rifle like this one I have saw. Its a 338 win mag necked to 8mm. It is a neat gun. Hits really hard.

Another option if recoil is not much of a factor would be the 378 wby. I shot one when I was younger and it is impressive when shooting gongs to say the least.

The most impressive on gongs was the 7mm RUM I had. It nearly broke off the 200 yard gongs where I used to shoot.

280 Remington

If you would like something that's easy on the shoulder then I would go with a 6.5 Creedmoor
