Red Dot Accuracy

Weren't Red Dot optical devices designed for better sight picture and fast target acquisition rather than accuracy?

I don't use one and never did so i might be wrong ,but wouldn't magnified scope be a right tool to use here?

They are faster than irons or magnified optics. That doesn't mean they can't be accurate as long as the shooter does his part.

Nice - good stuff because I ended up buying a bushnell trs-25

hoping it can shoot minute-of-head shot at anything under 100m off hand

i have the Trs-25 and love it. This unit is 3 MOA reticle, so depends upon the shooter. I use mine with a rifled slug bbl. and get no worse than pie plate accuracy (most times much better) at 50-75 yrds, which is about where i will be shooting at (50-75 yrds) for deer.

I am just on lunch and thought I would look into this some ... this is what I am talking about with a cluttered view (not my pics, someone else using an HK with drum sight and hooded front post)

Looking through the rear drum (which defeats the purpose of using an RDS? and is not easy to use with 2 eyes open)

Does anyone know if I can remove my front sight hood temporarily?

PS for anyone else looking at this thread for clarification on RDS - thought this might help, it's the best explaination I could find online !

That's sucky that the dot appears right on the sight hood. My Burris FastFire did that on my M14 so I put the Comp M2 on instead.

Are all of the elevation setting holes in the drum? On my G3 the drum has a notch instead of a hole for the 100m setting.

the RD is not actually that far left in person, it aligns right overtop of the front post

on, low cheek weld (difficult to focus this way, seems I have to hold my head too low and is a pita)

Get a riser for your RD, or buy a Comp M4/Eotech 553 (if you can find one.)

The CQB (last I checked) were $3,500, spend a grand on the optic - the rifle deserves it.

I don't either one is the best fit for that rifle though they're both good optics. The EOTech is probably too high, same for the Comp M4 with it's fixed base. They're optimized for the straight-line stock and dimensions of the AR.

An Aimpoint Micro with a QD mount will sit higher than the TRS and should bring the dot high enough. The Vortex Sparc will mount to any Micro compatible base for a more economical option.

A full size Aimpoint like a Comp M2 or M3 (or the various non-night vision ML and commercial C variations) in a low or medium 30mm ring will do the job as well.

I have a 553 on almost all my rifles, including the CQB. Is it a BIT high? Yes. Is it better then looking through the irons? Yes. Looking through the irons defeats the purpose of having a RD in the first place (as the point of the second half of the thread suggests.)

As it stands, I can keep my irons, and my cheek wield is still crisp. Second best, or maybe better is buy the m2, or the M4 and match a base to your rail. The 512 might be a viable choice too, no base required.

55gr winchester whitebox .223 - cheapest stuff I could find - 5 shots at 20-25 yards

never really shot for accuracy before but I can say I am very pleased with this. same settings at 50 yards grouped 1.5" higher
