Red Dots on Lever Guns

I went with a FX 2.5x scout mounted with QD rings. I like it a lot.

I did try a red dot on my Timberwolf .357 pump but didn't like the way it handled and went back to the irons.

I was at the local pusher's on Saturday and was looking at a Bushnell Tactical reflex sight. I also read some good things about the Browning Buckmark reflex sight. Yes, I know the Buckmark is only around $60. He recommended that instead of the more costly Bushnell. I was skeptical, but he insisted that it could handle being on a .30-30; I settled on my 336 as a test mule. I will be mounting it and test firing this coming weekend. Pics and follow up to boot!

Cabelas has a "Cabelas" branded Fastfire looking sight for only $159.99 if someone wants to try that type of sight with minimal investment.

Dot's are usually too big for any rifle. A 3 MOA dot will completely cover the black of a standard sight in target at 100 yards. Makes accurate shot placement impossible.
Think Ghost Sights. Williams sells 'em. Really just a big ring peep, but easier to see through.

IIRC deer vitals are about the size of a pie plate which is much larger then 3 MOA.

Blasphemy! Burn the witch!

But it'll probably work really well. Hell, even hairy-chested Zimbabwean PH Ivan Carter has a red dot on his 600 NE.

Holy hell- he sure does! http://ispot.tv/a/7qqI

OP- I bought a Win94 specifically to mount a Burris Fastfire on it for VI hunting in the soaking wet broom. Ignore the high priests of the Church of Leveraction!

Yes, indeed. If the little Buckmark doesn't work out, I am going to try either the Burris or Bushnell. I like the fact that they are all quite compact and unobtrusive.

Looks like someone's a member at Ridgedale :)

I just picked up a rail adaptor to turn the dovetail on my Henry .22 lever to a weaver so I can mount a Aimpoint T1 on it... will post a pic once I get it put together.

I'm more of a black rifle guy but yesterday I was really impulsive and picked up a ruger scout rifle. Threw my aim point micro on there and love it.

Might throw one on my 45/70 GBL too. Don't care what the fudds think

I used to be an iron-sight fanatic, but eyes have a limited warrantee and I found myself putting a Bushnell Trophy on my 336 last fall. I didn't bring anything home with it, but that was my fault, not the sight's. Frankly, it looks like a monkey trying to **** a football, but it groups well at the range and I'm confident it'll do the job. It's a 100m gun anyway - 1/4 MOA is pointless.

The stock iron sights on my Win 94 cover the whole deers vitals.

Nothing wrong with that chuck.... take it to your range and do some "snap shooting" at 50 yards.... then pat yourself on the back for a job well done.... I did this with my ruger scout and the results were boss....

not my cup of tea but I will not say it is stupid as I can see how it could be a very good idea... I just don't think my rifles should need batteries.

I put a Bushnell Red Dot on my .444 Marlin, and let me tell you something. I was ringing the gongs at 300 yards with ease. If you can use a set of crosshairs that don't have "windage/elevation" hash marks, then you can use a red dot. "Kentucky windage" is still the same. I found my "holdover" and that was that. I never really thought of my .444 as a long range "fun gun" but 300 and 400 yard shots with a levergun is just fun.

I'd like to know more about your mounting solutions. I'd love to stick a micro or maybe something smaller on my ranch hand, but no idea how a guy would mount it.
I'd want it mounted as low as possible.
