A friend of mine called me on a used Remington 700 25/06 sitting for sale at a local store a while back. Cheap. So bought it. It was a 1979 custom shop rifle with a nice piece of wood. It was hunted and had a few dents on it. Big deal.

I shot it. Seemed like it bedding would improve things so I had Rempel do it for me. It then shot nice 0.75" groups with 100TTSX without trying too hard.

I was going to leave it alone but then I became bored. So I stripped the finish. Steamed out a few of the easy dents. Sanded out a few more. The wood was very dense, and highly figured especially in the butt. The whiteline spacer under the recoil pad broke when I removed it. Oh well.

After about 6 or 7 coats of Antique Oil I think I'm done messing with this vintage custom shop rifle. I think it needs a black recoil pad now but that's about it.

Thanks guys.
The gloss is easily taken care of with a quick 2000 grit wet sand and wipe, but I’ll see if bothers me. The floorplate needs a repaint too.

This butt is so dense it actually negatively affects the balance imo. Maybe heavier scope mounts might help. Or a heavier barrel…
For now I’ll just watch it cure.

Nice work on a nice rifle! As for the pad I would get a classic red pad but that is me!

Gorgeous wood! I really like the flame in it. Certain wood likes certain tones, I dig the gloss you got there with that piece. Nice work on the refinish, the checkering looks clean too!

If you’re looking to heavy up the front end, epoxying in a bit of weight is easy to do.
