I had a problem with my 597 trigger group, the hammer would not lock back when cocked. I found that the pivot pin for the hammer had broken in the middle. The pin is hardened steel and measures .124" in diameter and is 1.040" long. I cut a 1.040" length off a 1/8" drill bit and used it to replace the broken pin.

I also noticed a lot of wear on the bolt handle where it fits into the bolt causing a sloppy fit. I used my mill and lathe to make up an improved version that fits the bolt tighter and has a longer handle to make it easier to use with gloves with a scope mounted. I made the part that fits into the bolt longer to try and reduce the amount of wear caused by the movement of the handle in the bolt.

Here you can see the fit of the original handle, it only fills about 3/4 the lenght of the slot in the bolt.

Here you can see the wear on the handle after only about 500 rounds.

Here are some pics of the new prototype one I made. It is a tighter fit and fills the entire lenght of the groove in the bolt. It is heavier than the original so I'll have to see if affects the bolt cycling.

Or shorten to just a little over the original length. Or cut it 1/4" just where the knurl starts. Make it smaller in diameter, put a thread and an aluminum insert of bigger diameter, knurled or whatever finish suits you. It will be lighter. Hopefully the cost of making one will not be prohibitive. You will have a good market for this item!

Nice work. If it turns out to be to heavy to cycle, you may just get away with drilling it out longitudily to lighten it.

I need a Mill and a Lathe! I had this project started, but I don't have access to a mill and lathe. Did it cycle with the additional weight? You can also try an aircraft grade aluminum rod. Not sure if it's 6061-T6.

I didn't actually try it with the longer handle due to weather here sucks but I'm going to get out later this week and try it. I bought the lathe and mill in the last year, told my wife I saved some money by making the bolt handle instead of having to buy one. She said I could have bought a lot of bolt handles for 8 grand! Good thing she has a sense of humor.

Cheers

Any plans of selling this item? What will be the cost? I am pretty sure, people are looking for this upgrade.

I made a second handle without the hollow handle. It was suggested to me that a heavier handle works better with .22WMR rifles to slow down bolt opening and prevent cartridge case bulging. The stock handle weighs 11 grams, the hollow handle version weighs 13 grams and the solid handle one weighs 16 grams. I also bought a 1/8" ball nosed end mill to better shape the groove for the detent spring. I posted a short video to show the difference in fit between the factory handle and the ones I made.

If anyone wants one of these please send me a pm.

I went out today and put 150 rounds through the 597. 50 with each of the original, hollow and solid handles. I could not see any difference in operation between any of them.

OP - johnnyc14 is generous enough sending me Version 1 with hollow shaft. My initial findings:

FORM - Very good. I found the length of the shaft with knurl a bit long. Maybe shorten the knurled part by 1/8" to 1/4" and enlarge the knurled portion diamater to 1/2". Maybe just my preference.
FIT - Very good. Version 1 has the rounded undercut that holds the spring-like part above the bolt. It held up to the cycling action. But a deeper oval cut will do better as to Version 2.
FUNCTION - Very good! Cycles perfectly.

OVERALL: VERY GOOD. More finish options OP. I did a cold bluing (heated the part before applying cold blue paste) and I can't complain any further. Just nice fit.

Well done OP. I am pretty sure, there will be CGNutters looking for this part.

Can't wait to see one of these. The non-knurled versions looks better, or just my preference.

They are pretty close in design. But you need a physical bolt assembly including the charging handle to at least do a dry-fitting. Otherwise, a drawing is required to do the modified charging handle.

I modified my 597 with a custom bolt handle too, but mine was a shortened 7.62 brass epoxied onto a steel shank.

Two more important mads I made were to drill and tap the mag well for 6-32 and replace the push pin on the bolt hold open catch with a 6-32 machine screw with an oversize thin, flat pan head.

Also to push the mag cap up onto the mag body then drill and tap 4-40 and fit a 4-40 machine screw.
